Caltrain Reduces Weekday Service to Expedite Electrification Construction

March 14 to April 1, 2022

TEMP WEEKDAY SCHEDULE TEMP WEEKDAY SCROLLING SCHEDULE

To accommodate Caltrain electrification construction work, temporary service changes in the weekday morning and late afternoon schedules (5:30-9 am and 3:30-7 pm) will be in effect.

Weekday middays, evenings, and weekend service remain unchanged.

Trains are single-tracking through Broadway, Burlingame, San Mateo, Hayward Park, and Hillsdale stations for three weeks affecting passenger boarding. Riders using those stations should be sure to pay attention to signage and announcements to make sure they are waiting at the correct platform at the station.

The work will require a reduction in peak-hour service and suspension of Baby Bullet service. The current 104 weekday trains will be reduced to 88.

Between the hours of 5:30-9 am and 3:30-7 pm, three trains per hour will operate in each direction. Due to single-tracking, the number of operating trains has been decreased to three to minimize delays. There will be no local service during these periods, but riders can transfer at mid-line stations to get to their destination.

See train numbers and patterns in the diagram below.

Passengers should refer to the timetable to find the train stopping at their desired origin and destination stations and take note of the train number.

On Monday, April 4, Caltrain will revert back to the regular weekday schedule.

Caltrain will also have a 50 percent off fare promotion during month of April.

Caltrain news release

Electric Trains Running on Caltrain Corridor

for the First Time in 160 Year History

06/06/2023

The electrification of Caltrain has reached another major milestone as electric trains operated under power from the overhead contact system (OCS) for the first time.

Initial tests will be conducted between Santa Clara and College Park Stations on the Santa Clara Drill Track. Test runs will expand to the main track, between San Antonio and San Jose Diridon stations this summer.

“The start of testing for our new electric trains marks an historic moment for our agency, symbolizing tangible progress towards electrification” said Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard. “It signifies a future of improved service, reduced environmental impact and a more reliable experience that will benefit both our riders, and the communities that we serve.”

“Now that our new trains are running on our own power for the first time, it’s clear that the start of electrified service is just around the corner,” said Caltrain Board Chair Jeff Gee. “I couldn’t be more excited for our riders to experience the future of Caltrain next fall.”

Electric trains are quieter than Caltrain’s current diesel fleet, so the public is advised to pay close attention when crossing the tracks and to always wait for the gate to fully rise before crossing.

Caltrain’s historic Electrification Project is the first undertaking in North America in a generation in which diesel trains and their infrastructure components are transitioned to an electrified system.

The project will improve the customer experience by increasing the number of trains, modernizing service and adding new safety elements. The new trains will feature on board displays with digital trip information, increased storage capacities, baby-changing tables, Wi-Fi and power outlets at every seat.

Electrification will also help meet ambitious regional and state climate action goals by lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and relieving traffic congestion. Additionally, electrified service will advance equity along the corridor by reducing noise and air pollution while increasing access for priority equity communities. It will also set the framework for California’s future High Speed Rail network that will run on the Caltrain corridor.

Caltrain Successfully Completes Three Major Milestones Towards Completion of Electrification Project

Caltrain today announced that it has completed the installation of every pole for the Overhead Contact System (OCS), which provides power to the electric trains, upgraded the signal system that allow electric trains to operate along the Caltrain corridor and successfully tested the new electric trains at maximum track speed of 79 mph. These three major milestones bring the Caltrain Electrification Project closer to passenger service in fall 2024.

Progressive Railroading, 1/9/24

Three Caltrain electric trains complete testing

Three of Caltrain's 23 electric trainsets have completed 1,000 miles of testing along the railroad's corridor in Southern California.

The entire new fleet must meet all safety and quality standards prior to the launch of electrified service in fall 2024, Caltrain officials said in a news release.

The 1,000-mile testing process is required to ensure all safety and quality standards are met in order to ensure that the trains can safely operate.  . . .
