MARTA said it will pay for streetcar operations with proceeds from the half-penny sales tax approved by Atlanta voters in November.

Spmarshall42

ATLANTA — The Atlanta City Council approved plans to turn the city’s streetcar line, including its operations, staffing, maintenance, and other functions, over to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) beginning next year, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The $99 million streetcar opened in December 2014 amid sky-high expectations, but ridership failed to meet expectations in its first year and plummeted nearly 60% after the city began charging $1 to ride.

Atlanta, GA Journal-Constitution, 2/9/18:

Free Atlanta Streetcar rides? MARTA considers changes

Riding the Atlanta Streetcar may be free again when MARTA takes over its operation later this year.

The transit agency also may reduce the streetcar’s operating hours but run it more frequently along its 2.7-mile route through downtown. And it may align transit schedules to make it easier for passengers to hop off a MARTA train and use the streetcar for the last legs of their journeys.

Metro Magazine, 6/6/18:

MARTA to assume operations of Atlanta Streetcar

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will assume ownership and day-to-day operations of the Atlanta Streetcar from the City of Atlanta on July 1.

The four-car light rail system will be integrated into MARTA operations and its new Office of Light Rail Operations. . . .

SNIP

MARTA is currently focused on four transition objectives: enhancing safety and security on the streetcar, increasing ridership, reducing operating costs, and system integration. The streetcar’s 2.7-mile circular route presents an opportunity for MARTA to provide last-mile connectivity to riders, aligning rail schedules so commuters can use the streetcar for the last leg of their trip. . . .
