VRE Train Talk Alert, 1/20:

Winter Weather Advisory for VRE Service Area

Before the major snowstorm that will hit our area beginning on Friday, we will see a dusting to an inch of snow this evening but we still plan on operating normal VRE service on Thursday. We have crews out pre-treating platforms and parking lots but advise riders to be cautious when driving and walking tomorrow morning on your way to work.

Back to the foot of snow we are expecting after that, we are still monitoring the storm with the local jurisdictions and our host railroads and we will keep you updated via Train Talk, vre.org, facebook, and twitter with any changes to our service. If you are interested in how we make this decision, please take a look at our blog post on the subject. Please remember, we take your safety seriously, and you should, too.

Winter Weather Advisory for VRE Service Area

Winter Weather Advisory

Please know that we are monitoring the weather now and overnight with our host railroads, the National Weather Service and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to help determine if conditions will allow for the safe operation of our trains.

In the event that we do need to cancel service, or operate on a modified schedule, we will get that information out as early as possible usually no later than 4:15 a.m. of the affected service day. All information will be posted to our website at www.vre.org, on our Twitter and Facebook accounts, through Train Talk text and email alerts, on our station signs and our information hotline, 1-800-RIDE-VRE. VRE also contacts local media including TV, radio and traffic reporters.

If you are interested in how we make this decision, please take a look at our blog post on the subject. Please remember, we take your safety seriously, and you should, too.

Update: Winter Weather Advisory for VRE Service Area

Winter Weather Advisory Update

As of 10pm tonight, VRE plans to operate an "S" schedule on Friday, January 22. Only trains marked with an "S" on the schedule will operate.

We plan on operating the eight car consists on the earliest train departures (the "mid-days") in anticipation of an early rush and expect those trains to be extremely crowded and VRE cannot deviate from the published scheduled departures.

That said, there is still a possibility of cancelling service altogether. We will make our final decision by 4am Friday morning. Stay tuned to Train Talk for more information.

Thank you for your patience and for riding VRE.

While we have been digging out of the blizzard, please be aware that some parking may be lost to piles of snow. Also, take extra precaution in your commute tomorrow; lots and platforms have been cleaned and treated but snow may fall from canopies and there may be refreeze overnight.
