There has been yet another BNSF derailment in Montana. This one is near Culbertson (45 miles west of Williston ND), not far from the one that just got cleaned-up today. BNSF does not have an estimated time to reopen the line.

The good news for the Fest is that the Empire Builder trainset that was scheduled to arrive Chicago yesterday (July 15), arrived today, and is reported being serviced to cover our #7/27 tomorrow (July 17).  So, it appears we will have a train from Chicago to St. Paul.

Now how about 8/28(17) departing Seattle which I am on. Is it running the whole route or do I need to fly to msp or Chicago? Guess I'll just arrive in Seattle and figure it out from there. No I'm not calling Amtrak cause I'll just get multiple responses.

Due to the second derailment, the BNSF line is closed west of Williston ND until sometime Saturday.  Yesterday's (July 16) westbound Empire Builder departure from Chicago was a coach-only stub train that terminated at MSP.  It still appears that our westbound train today (#7(17)) - will be a normal consist.  Since we are only going as far as MSP, we should be OK (famous last words).

As for the eastbound due to leave Seattle today and for the trip MSP-CHI on Sunday - #8(17) - that is anyone's guess.  It depends on when the line is reopened.  My guess is that it will leave SEA as scheduled and deal with the Montana mess when it gets there.  That leaves a world of possibilities for the Fest return trip MSP-CHI on Sunday.

That's all fine and dandy but I'm departing Seattle on 8(17). Looks like I'm flying to Chicago or screw the fest and just take the cs to l.a and the swc to Chicago. Yes I used abbreviations deal with it you rich folks can go anywhere on a whim I can't afford no 600 plain ticket.

I think either of those options would be a smart move. The EB ( :P  ) route is a mess right now with trains stacked up all over waiting for the line to reopen. No telling what things will be like for Amtrak.

If you want to fly, Southwest has some SEA - Chicago flights tomorrow at about $250. Just a thought.

If you wish to join the fest in MSP, it looks like tickets for tomorrow, at least at this moment, from SEA are about $230 on either Southwest or US Airways. (There's also one tonight that's in the same range on Southwest.) Both have a layover required. I'm not sure if that would work for you (would require a hotel night in the MSP area) but thought I'd offer it in case you wanted to join the fest in MSP instead of in Chicago.
