WNYW-TV. Fox-5 in New York, NY, 4/9/14:

Newark Airport AirTrain to be suspended 75 days

Officials at the Port Authority say service on the AirTrain that serves Newark Liberty International Airport will be suspended for 75 days starting on May 1.

This is the story.

So with the airport rail station closed, and NJT & Amtrak trains not stopping there, trains should gain a few minutes on their respective schedules. There may be some additional dwell time at Newark Penn going towards New York unless they adjust the schedules.

I just tried some arbitrary dates in June to "attempt" to book an Amtrak trip involving the Newark Airport (EWR) station. It does not surprise me that I still could book such a trip if I wanted to. Perhaps Amtrak or their webmasters haven't yet gotten the memo that the station will be closed.

Note that the reporter states that during the shutdown there'll be no monorail service to Newark Penn Station.

Huh? When did that line extension get built? :P

Maybe they found that error and fixed it, because I don't see anything about the monorail going to Newark Penn. But the question still remains, why close the Newark Airport rail station? There is a roadway off US 1/9 that is exclusive for substitute buses when needed. They have run buses to and from that station before. Granted dedicated airport buses from Newark Penn Station used to be the norm before 2001, but people are used to the airport rail station being there. The bus ride from there to the airline terminals, while less convenient and subject to delays than the monorail, would still be far superior to the longer bus ride through what could be heavy traffic on the main gateway road into and out of downtown Newark.

It's true that citizens don't have vehicle access to the station correct?

True. The area around the rail station is a secure area. There is a roadway that only official vehicles can use, which I would take to be emergency vehicles, those who work at the station, and again I've seen substitute buses use it when the monorail has been down in the past.

Passing by this morning, there are monorail trains parked on both tail tracks in the Airport monorail station. So they are not keeping them all mothballed in their storage/maintenance facility. Still about 5 or 6 weeks to go before service is scheduled to resume, so if they are already testing things that is a good sign.
