Service Update for Friday, January 30, 2015
The operation remained fluid through the period with velocity increases across all business units this week. The combination of the work completed in 2014 to add rail capacity, locomotives, and people along with generally favorable seasonal weather are the key drivers in the recent operating performance gains being experienced across the network.
With a substantial fleet of active locomotives, which includes more than 500 new ones that were put into service throughout last year and an additional 330 scheduled to arrive throughout 2015, the number of trains holding for power has declined to negligible levels. In fact, this week we had no trains holding for power in the North Region. As more locomotives are added to the fleet nearly every week, we expect to remain well-positioned to provide trains with the needed power.
While we benefited from another week of mild weather across much of the network, below zero temperatures are expected to return to parts of the Northern Plains and upper Midwest as we move into February. Extreme temperatures require us to adjust train lengths to ensure proper air flow is generated for their braking systems.
Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending January 27:
Total trains on the system was essentially unchanged from the prior week with an average of 1,706 trains on the system.
Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 270.2 compared to 265.7 MPD the prior week. Locomotive dwell was down two percent to 19.6 hours versus 20.0 hours for the prior week.
Car velocity was up nearly two percent at 212.7 MPD versus 209.0 MPD recorded the prior week.
Train velocity held steady with the prior week at 17.8 miles per hour.
Total volume was a robust 199,231 units in Week 3 (ending January 24).
Terminal dwell improved by two percent at 25.0 hours versus 25.5 hours the prior week.
