JEWELERS ROW — The new Washington-Wabash "L" station is officially open in the Loop.

The $75-million "L" stop replaced two century-old stations in Jewelers Row after making its debut Thursday morning. The new "L" stop serves the Brown, Orange, Purple, Pink and Green lines and now projects to be one of the busiest in the city.

"This is a new gold standard for what a new 'L' station should look like," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said at a ribbon-cutting Thursday.

The CTA’s Randolph/Wabash L station closes for good at midnight Saturday, and with it goes a tiny bit of Chicago movie history.

The station was featured in the hit 1995 movie “While You Were Sleeping.”

Sandra Bullock plays Lucy, an unlucky-in-love CTA token collector — remember L and subway tokens? The CTA stopped using them in 1997.

When Peter, the man of her dreams, played by Peter Gallagher, is mugged on the platform and tumbles onto the tracks, Lucy springs into action.

The Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced this week its 2018 Design Excellence Award winners, among which was the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) Washington/Wabash CTA station, located in Downtown Chicago.

The CTA station was recognized with the Distinguished Building Award – Honor Award, AIA said. The organizations involved in its development include the Chicago Department of Transportation and the CTA. FH Paschen acted as general contractor for the project, which was completed in 2017.

“Architecture firm EXP reimagined the concept of the busy station, creating an elegant canyon that stretches down the city’s historic Wabash Avenue,” a statement said. “Wave-like canopies are juxtaposed against the angular backdrop, elevating the station from a functional checkpoint to public sculpture.”
