Our stay in Norfolk is the evening of July 17th. Norfolk does not have too many downtown hotels near the TIDE light rail, but there are several chain hotels available and one de-flagged hotel that used to be part of a chain. None are immediately adjacent to the Amtrak station, so a long walk would be in order. One can also take the TIDE westbound from Harbor Park to the other downtown stations.

There is another small cluster of hotels within several blocks of the eastern endpoint of the TIDE line, Newtown Road. Newtown Road forms the boundary between the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. So any hotels on the west side of the street are in Norfolk, and those on the east side are in Virginia Beach. They were built to be near the Virginia Beach Expressway (all pre-date the light rail!) so the walk may be the equivalent of anywhere from 3 to 7 blocks. You would get there by taking TIDE from Harbor Park eastbound as far as the line currently goes. These hotels are NOT near the oceanfront, so don't expect to be anywhere near the beach.

Now if you still cannot find anything to your liking or find your choices to be sold out, OR you want to see the Atlantic Ocean, there are also a lot of hotels on the Virginia Beach oceanfront, the resort area. They can be accessed by taking the HRT #20 bus from the Newtown Road TIDE station to the oceanfront. (There is also a #28 bus that only runs rush hours but it's a little faster.) But I would expect the resort area to be more expensive particularly since it will be summer.

Kevin, I am not clear how far the light rail is from the Norfolk Amtrak station. It looks like most of the hotels are along the light rail line.

Steve, the Harbor Park light rail station is across the stadium parking lot from the Amtrak station.

Just a note to those staying at the Sheraton Waterside in Norfolk: Looking at a map and better understanding the location of the Sheraton within the Waterside district, the closest TIDE station appears to be Civic Plaza, not MacArthur Square. If the weather is favorable, a walk from the Amtrak station at Harbor Park is also not out of the question. The Courtyard by Marriott is along the TIDE light rail line, looking to be equidistant between the Civic Plaza and MacArthur Square stations.

I just looked at a map of Norfolk and it looks like the Sheraton is closer to MacArthur Square. Do you know the distance (by blocks or mileage) from each of the stations or should I phone the hotel and ask the hotel which station is closer?

The term blocks can mean different things, since there are different lengths between cross streets along each walking route.

From the Civic Plaza station one would walk what looks to be 2 or 3 blocks south on St. Paul's Avenue. That would put you at Waterside Drive, and the Sheraton entrance should be across from there. From MacArthur Square, walking south on Atlantic Street 3 blocks (plus maybe a fraction of a block since the TIDE diagonally bisects MacArthur Square) puts you facing the Waterside Marketplace complex. You would then cross Waterside Drive and turn to your left to access the Sheraton. I guess it depends which direction you're coming from or going to on the light rail.
