Chicago Tribune, 2/17:

Additional Amtrak trains planned for Glenview

Rail transportation plans could add seven to 10 daily Amtrak Hiawatha trains coming through Glenview.

Adding the train runs would impact the downtown Metra tracks east of Harlem Avenue and the Union Pacific line that crosses Lake Avenue and Shermer and Willow roads in west Glenview.

Obviously this article was focused on Glenview, but it would be an increase of trains on the whole Hiawatha Corridor to and from Milwaukee.  This does contradict the recent news that the Illinois Governor wants to cut service.

Milwaukee Business Journal, 3/28:

Study to consider adding more round-trips on Amtrak Hiawatha line

The state this summer could hold hearings on the proposal to add three more round-trips a day to the Hiawatha passenger rail line between Milwaukee and Chicago.

.  .  . The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is preparing a study of increasing the number of daily trips to 10, said Arun Rao, Wisconsin DOT passenger rail manager.

A study also is underway to add a second daily train run on the Empire Builder route  .  .  .

Interesting stuff here. A second Chicago-Twin Cities train could by definition also become one of the Hiawatha Corridor additions if it carries local passengers between Chicago and Milwaukee; officially the current Empire Builder doesn't.

Also the western terminal is not definite. What I expect might happen is not what I would want to happen logically. What I expect is that Amtrak goes for the cheapest means and originates/terminates at St. Paul Union Depot. What would make better sense would be to have Target Field Station as the terminus. By not having to go west of Minneapolis Junction (the connection between the current Empire Builder and Northstar routes) it could either take a wye into the station or do a 1.8 mile backup move (which I think is about what the Silver Star does in Tampa). St. Cloud -- well the more service the merrier but by going to St. Cloud a backup move would still be a certainty to serve Target Field Station, which would be time consuming for through passengers. Or, a St. Cloud-bound train could bypass Minneapolis, just as the Empire Builder does now by only stopping in St. Paul. The bypass option has a stop in Fridley which I suppose would have a bus or Northstar connection to Target Field.

JWC Media, 9/30/16:

Will More Amtrak Service Hurt Property Values?

Three more Amtrak round trips between Chicago and Milwaukee with the usual stop in Glenview seemed like a good idea until some village officials learned the spawned complexity may reduce property values.

Chicago, IL Tribune, 10/3/16:

Amtrak Hiawatha project environmental assessment to be released

A n environmental assessment will be released this week on the possible impact of adding three more round trips on the Amtrak Hiawatha line between Milwaukee and Chicago, which stops in downtown Glenview, said Scott Speegle, passenger rail marketing manager for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Amtrak Hiawatha project environmental study released

Amtrak's proposal for service improvements on the Hiawatha line between Chicago and Milwaukee would result in no significant environmental impacts, according to a draft environmental impact statement released yesterday.

The Wisconsin and Illinois departments of transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration completed the environmental review of Amtrak's proposal to add to the service through operational improvements or increased frequency to meet existing and future demand for passenger-rail service, according to the document.

Milwaukee, WI Journal-Sentinel, 10/17/16:

Input sought on Milwaukee-Chicago rail upgrades

After nearly four years of studying and talking about increasing passenger rail service between Chicago and Milwaukee, Amtrak and the Wisconsin and Illinois transportation departments are ready to hear from the public.

Story is here.  I hope that a third track can be installed at strategic locations, so that in the southernmost segment between Rondout and Chicago, the Hiawathas can pass the slower Metra local trains and not get stuck behind them.

Milwaukee, WI Business Journal, via WITI-TV, Fox-6 in Milwaukee, WI, 10/20/16:

Amtrak Hiawatha upgrade of up to $200M would add three routes per day

Increased rush hour ridership on Amtrak’s Hiawatha passenger rail route has Wisconsin and Illinois planning major upgrades to add up to three new round trips per day.

Story is here.   Faulty headline says three ROUTES per day, but there is only one route between Chicago and Milwaukee.  The first paragraph stating 3 new round trips got it right.
