WEATHER WATCH

The remains of Ernesto continue to plow northward. The current path has the center of the storm passing over Hancock, Maryland. The MARC service area is under a flash flood watch and rain of 5 to 10 inches is possible tomorrow.

CSX retains its own private weather forecaster. When they issue a flash flood warning CSX’s policy is to then reduce speeds to 40mph. There is a high probability that some time on Friday trains will be operating at reduced speed. This can impact trains 15-30 minutes depending upon the duration of their trip. Amtrak does not have flash flood speed limits but historically flooding has occurred near the Anacostia River and near the entrance to the tunnels under Baltimore. In many cases winds can be a bigger problem on both railroads with downed trees in electrical wires and across tracks.

Predicting the path of storms is a thankless task but as soon as we have any information on impacts to MARC service we will issue an E-mail and update http://www.mtamaryland.com/ . The MARCTracker service at
http://www.marctracker.com/ can provide additional information. And don’t leave your slicker and umbrella on the train tomorrow morning.
