*421 detoured between Chicago and St Louis via the former C&EI and there was a bus bridge between Little Rock and Fort Worth (Which was, I'm sad to write, very poorly handled. Downgrading from a Deluxe Bedroom to a cramped bus seat for more than 6 hours was bad enough, but there was almost no communication about what was happening and no provision for meals. I will be asking for a substantial refund!)

I feel your pain Bob. Amtrak did know about that bus bridge because there was an alert on their site starting around October 10th, for the disruption to take place October 20-21. So they should have been ready to handle it. See here.
