Lincoln, NE Journal-Star, 9/10/17:

The Amtrak Line: Even before deadly crash, rail board was considering tearing up tracks

The Amtrak left the depot just after midnight Aug. 18, making its nightly run out of Lincoln on a route established nearly 150 years ago.

It built speed as it crossed several streets -- F, West A and Folsom -- and neared West South, now almost out of town. There, the crossing signals lit up and the train’s horn and headlight announced its approach, witnesses said.

Lincoln, NE Journal-Star editorial, 9/19/17:

Study must continue on Lincoln’s rail crossings

The deaths of two teens at a west Lincoln railroad crossing last month brought into focus the network of such intersections of rail and pavement across the city.

Before the fatal collision along West South Street, though, the Railroad Transportation Safety District had begun to explore modifications to Lincoln’s rail system, ranging from the installation of a quiet zone to increase safety ($5 million) to the long-term removal and rerouting of the nearly 150-year-old line ($25 million to $35 million) on which Lincoln’s latest fatal train-car crash occurred.
