      Nebraska lawmaker seeks state funding for Omaha streetcar — if it extended north toward airport  

 

 

The controversial Omaha streetcar project could get a $100 million jolt from the State of Nebraska under a plan before the Legislature — that is, if the route were extended into North Omaha and to the airport.

A conservative taxpayer watchdog group is working to put the brakes on the plans for a streetcar in Omaha.

 

Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom claims the streetcar is a wasteful project and has sponsored a petition to stop the streetcar in its tracks.

 'This will be a game changer': Omaha streetcar could expand into Council Bluffs    

 

 

 

The Omaha Streetcar Authority is on board with looking beyond state boundaries.

 

Read

 

Probably a good idea given the number of casinos in Council Bluffs that would surely generate ridership as long as it's not a slow ride on the streetcar.  But a first phase needs to be built on the Nebraska side first in downtown Omaha before extending it to the east into Iowa.

 

Light rail crossing state lines is nothing new.... witness Metro St. Louis, which crosses the Mississippi River and serves both Missouri and Illinois.  Portland's TriMet MAX Yellow Line may someday cross a bridge into Washington.
