Track Outages in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri Impacting Operations

We are experiencing significant service challenges and delays across portions of Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri due to flooding. As we notified impacted customers, heavy rain during the past 48 hours has caused track washouts in multiple locations, which has resulted in service outages involving four BNSF subdivisions: the Cherokee Subdivision, which runs between Springfield, Mo. and Tulsa, Okla., the Fort Scott Subdivision, which runs between Kansas City and Springfield, the Thayer North Subdivision, which runs between Springfield and Thayer, Mo. and the River Subdivision, which runs between St. Louis and River Junction, Ark., approximately 20 miles west of Memphis.

BNSF crews and equipment have been deployed to the affected locations and are addressing track conditions to restore service as soon as possible. Service could resume on the Cherokee Subdivision as early as Monday morning. However, flash flood watches and warnings remain in effect across the region, and there is currently no estimate on when train flows could resume on the other three subdivisions. With water levels expected to rise in some areas and additional rain possible, service on our Cuba Subdivision, which runs between Springfield and St. Louis, Mo., is also at risk later today.

Our operations teams are re-routing some trains to minimize this disruption. If you have questions regarding your shipment(s), please contact BNSF Customer Support at 1-888-428-2673 (select option 4, then option 3).

We will continue to provide customers with further updates.

Arkansas and Missouri Track Outages Update & Monitoring Severe Weather Threat in the Pacific Northwest

BNSF continues to address service challenges caused by the major flooding that has impacted multiple subdivisions in the central U.S., specifically the mid-Mississippi River Valley. As we reported, a powerful storm system brought heavy rainfall to parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri last weekend, with some areas of southern Missouri receiving a record-breaking 10 to 12 inches of rain in less than 48 hours.

This video below shows the high water and damage that occurred along a portion of our Cuba Subdivision near Eureka, Missouri:

Our crews have worked aggressively to restore service on eight area subdivisions that have been forced out of service at various times during the past several days. The following three subdivisions remain out of service with water over the rail reported in multiple locations: Thayer South Subdivision, between Thayer and Memphis, Tenn., Cuba Subdivision, between Springfield and St. Louis, Mo., and River Subdivision, between Crystal City and Cape Girardeau, Mo.

No firm estimates are currently available as to when train flows may resume on these subdivisions, however, track repairs being made on the Thayer South today may enable service to resume tonight. Water levels on some rivers will crest at or near record levels this weekend, but no additional rain is in the forecast until the middle of next week, at the earliest.

Our operations continue to re-route some trains to minimize this disruption. Customers tracing their freight may notice nonstandard routings, locations and interchanges. This traffic re-routing could lead to longer overall transit times compared to normal conditions.

In the Pacific Northwest, high winds and heavy rain last night caused some temporary service interruptions involving several subdivisions in Washington. Fallen trees and power lines, as well as a landslide, on a portion of our Seattle Subdivision required multiple clearing efforts during the overnight hours. As this storm system moves east today, heavy rain and some storms are possible this afternoon and tonight in eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle. Flash flood watches are in effect in this area, and the risk for landslides remains elevated. BNSF crews are monitoring susceptible areas closely and will respond quickly to any disruption.

We will continue to provide customers with further updates on any significant service interruptions.

UPDATE: Service Restored on Cuba Subdivision in Missouri

After an extended outage, BNSF re-started train operations on our Cuba Subdivision, which runs between Springfield and St. Louis, Missouri, yesterday at 4:00 p.m. Central Time. As we reported, the subdivision had been forced out of service for more than a week from the major flooding that impacted the region. BNSF crews worked nearly nonstop to remove debris as well as complete the extensive track and bridge repairs needed in more than a dozen locations.

Several maintenance windows are scheduled during the remainder of the week for additional track surfacing. Customers may continue to experience delays on shipments designated to move through this corridor until operations have fully normalized.

The River Subdivision between Crystal City and Cape Girardeau, Mo. remains out of service as the adjacent Mississippi River is still above flood stage in multiple locations. There is currently no estimate on when train flows may resume on this subdivision.

Another storm system could bring strong storms and more heavy rain to the region tomorrow and into Friday. While water levels have receded, any additional rainfall could affect track conditions in recently flooded areas and cause some service disruptions. BNSF crews are monitoring the conditions closely and will address any affected areas as quickly as possible.

We will continue to provide customers with further updates on any significant service interruptions.
