FRA news release 2/4:

FRA Gives Green Light to Rebuild BWI Rail Station, Increase Service and Reliability

Completed environmental review allows Maryland to secure funds for final design and construction

WASHINGTON—The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the new Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) rail station. The project includes adding a fourth track to nine miles of the Northeast Corridor surrounding BWI and reconfiguring the platforms to allow boarding from all four tracks.

“The current rail station and infrastructure at BWI was built more than 30 years ago and does not support today’s needs or the region’s expected growth,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “The completion of the environmental review for this project brings BWI one step closer to a safer rail station, reduced rail congestion, and increased reliability.”

Beyond Traffic, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s draft framework for the future, projects a population growth of 70 million more Americans over the next 30 years. The Northeast megaregion, which includes the area of Baltimore, among others, is projected to add an additional 18.4 million people during this time, a 35.2 percent growth from 2010.

FRA completed the environmental assessment and preliminary engineering, which will allow final design and then construction to begin. Funding for final design and construction has not yet been identified.

Both Amtrak and Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) trains provide passenger rail service at the station, which has seen increased ridership by daily commuters and airline passengers. The station is Amtrak’s thirteenth busiest station in the country.

Currently, there are only three tracks between the Grove Interlocking to the south near Odenton, Md. and the Winans Interlocking to the north near Halethorpe, Md. The addition of a fourth track would increase rail capacity and reliability.

“A new BWI rail station will allow both airline and rail passengers to get to their destinations safely, reliably and efficiently,” said FRA Administrator Sarah Feinberg. “Today’s announcement is a significant step toward achieving that goal.”

In Fiscal Year 2010, FRA awarded a $9.4 million High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail grant funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to the Maryland Department of Transportation to fund the environmental analysis and conduct preliminary engineering work.

MARC service alert:

BWI Rail Station waiting room and ticket office

Construction on the rennovation of the BWI Rail Station waiting room and ticket office will begin on Monday, August 27, when a temporary facility will open just north of the existing building. This project will completely transform the station, expanding the waiting area and constructing new restrooms. Estimated completion is Late 2019. In addition, the walkway to the platforms closest to the ticket office will close.

The temporary facility will be smaller than the current station with restrooms located in a separate structure. A new crosswalk will be available from the north end of Garage 2 to the temporary station and a new walkway will connect the temporary station to the northbound platform.

Passengers will still have access to the stairs and elevators to reach the southbound track, but will need to use either the new walkway, or the other walkway south of the station building (closer to Garage 1). Passengers should allow extra time to walk to their train, especially in the morning going to the southbound platform. MARC ticket machines will remain in Garage 2 next to the parking payment stations and airport shuttle bus stop. There will also be a machine inside the temporary station.

Thank you for riding MARC Train.

Way, way, overdue! By virtue of the fact that this thread is 7-1/2 years old should say something about how the need has been there but nothing has been done. The station building was constructed in the 1980's, probably a contemporary of the original Metropark station, which was rebuilt and expanded in the past 10 years. The BWI station is totally outdated, and way too tiny for the use it gets. The seats themselves are old and worn, they are close together, and if you walk in there with luggage there is little room to maneuver between people's legs and the wall. Happy to finally see progress there!

MARC Service Alert 8/29/18:

BWI Rail Station Thursday power outage

BG&E will be performing the cut over of the temporary BWI Rail station ticket office and waiting room from generator to regular electric power tomorrow starting at 11:00am. The power will be cut to the entire BWI station area, which includes the parking garages. Elevators will not function during this time in either the garage or the overhead bridge to the southbound platform.

The temporary station will maintain power using the generator -- MARC passengers must purchase tickets at the temporary station. Please allow extra time prior to boarding your train.

If you need to exit the garage during this time, SP+ customer service staff will be stationed at the garage exit gates with handheld credit card readers to process parking fees.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience and patronage as the BWI Rail Station renovations progress.
