RBMNRR news release:

Reading and Northern Railroad and Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway announced today that Santa Claus is coming to Jim Thorpe and Schuylkill County this Christmas season.

Port Clinton, Pa., Nov. 25, 2014 Reading and Northern Railroad and Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway announced today that Santa Claus is coming to Jim Thorpe and Schuylkill County this Christmas season.

Bring the family to Jim Thorpe and ride one of the approximate 60-minute Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway train rides that are scheduled on weekends, beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving. Rides leave the station at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and run through Sunday, Dec. 21.

“Not many tourist railroads operate trains into a state park”, said Lisa Matz, Passenger Service Administrator at the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway.

Not only will riders see beautiful winter scenery in the picturesque Lehigh Gorge State Park from the comfort of a 1930s passenger coach; they will also have opportunities to take in the rest of Jim Thorpe, known for its Victorian-architecture and rich coal history.

Santa Claus will also make an appearance on all trains to speak with the good little boys and girls; and as an added bonus this year, the railroad has purchased over 8,000 candy canes and old-fashioned clear candies to distributes to the children.

In addition to the Jim Thorpe scenic railroad rides, Reading and Northern and LGSRY has scheduled several Santa Claus Special excursions throughout Schuylkill County, powered by the always-popular No. 425 steam locomotive.

Trips will depart Minersville on Nov. 29 and Dec. 14; Pottsville’s Union Station on Nov. 30 and Dec. 21; Schuylkill Have on Dec. 13; and Tamaqua on Dec. 20. Each day, excursions will leave at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and will last approximately 70 minutes.

“The Santa Claus Special train rides in Schuylkill County are unique because one child rides free for every paying adult riding the train,” said Dr. Robert Kempes of Schuylkill Haven.  Kempes also said, “It's a great way to get ready for the holidays and treat your kids and grandkids who have had The Polar Express book read to them, or have seen the movie.  The steam engine is especially appropriate.”

Tickets for the trips at all locations are now available. To place an order for a Schuylkill County excursion, visit www.lgsry.com and go to “special events” or call the following sponsors:
