Metro Magazine, 8/17/17:

STV, Mott MacDonald JV lands Sound Transit light rail extension contracts

Northwest Transit Systems Partners (NTSP), a joint venture consisting of STV and Mott MacDonald, will oversee the systems construction of two transformative new light rail extensions that will serve tens of thousands of commuters who will ride future extensions of Sound Transit’s light rail system.

NTSP was approved by the Sound Transit Board of Directors in May. The team will perform systems construction management services for the $3.7 billion East Link Extension, a 14-mile-long extension connecting Seattle, Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Redmond; and the $1.9 billion 4.3-mile Northgate Link Extension between the University of Washington at Husky Stadium, the University District, and the Northgate neighborhood. Both light rail extensions were approved by voters and are key components of a larger system expansion being undertaken by Sound Transit over the next 25 years.

Sound Transit has picked STV and Mott MacDonald to oversee the construction of two major light-rail extensions.

The two firms will work as part of the Northwest Transit Systems Partners (NTSP) joint venture, which Sound Transit's board approved in May, STV officials said in a press release.

Sound Transit taps Siemens traction power tech for light rail expansion
Posted on February 22, 2018

Siemens was selected to provide the power infrastructure for Seattle’s latest expansion — the Northgate and East Link lines — of the Seattle Sound Transit light rail system. Siemens will supply 13 traction power substations (TPSS), two medium voltage substations (MVSS), and one cross passage tunnel tie station on the Northgate and East Link and fully integrate these additions into the existing infrastructure. It will also upgrade one existing substation supplied by Siemens in 2008.

The Northgate (4.3 miles) and East Link (14 miles) lines and are set to open in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Passengers in Bellevue and Northgate will benefit from an easier and less congested commute as these new traction power stations enhance the efficiency and operation of the regional transit system.

Sound Transit news release

Light rail vehicle testing begins on Northgate Link extension

January 18, 2021

Starting today, people will see light rail test trains operating on the new elevated light rail tracks in Northgate as crews prepare for the on-time and on-budget opening of passenger service to Northgate in September.

"Seeing light rail vehicles on the Northgate extension really drives home how close we are getting to the start of revenue service," said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff. "Less than a year from now, Northgate Link will be offering passengers reliable, traffic-free travel to downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac airport."

Trains ran for the first time this morning to test the overhead electrical power system throughout the Northgate line. Testing will continue for several months, mostly during morning hours. While most of the line is underground, the trains at Northgate will be noticed by travelers on I-5 and in surrounding areas. The results of the testing will determine whether any adjustments are necessary to the system to improve performance.

Construction on Northgate Link began in 2012 with a baseline budget of $1.9 billion and a projected opening date of 2021.

When finished, the 4.3 mile regional light rail extension will offer riders reliable, traffic-free travel between Northgate and downtown Seattle in just 14 minutes. Trains traveling in 3.5-mile twin tunnels north to and from the University of Washington Station at Husky Stadium will stop at underground stations in the U District and Roosevelt neighborhoods, exit the tunnels at First Avenue Northeast and Northeast 95th and transition to a 0.8-mile elevated guideway to reach the station.

Sound Transit is simultaneously working to extend light rail north, south, east and west. Northgate Link will be followed in 2023 by the opening of service to Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond's Overlake community. Additional extensions to Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Kent/Des Moines, Federal Way and downtown Redmond are planned in 2024.

The Seattle Times, 1/30/21

Power tests begin for light-rail trains linking Northgate and U.W.

After more than eight years of construction, Sound Transit started running trains this month into the new Northgate Station, scheduled to open in September.

The first test trips, often at low speed, are designed to check the catenary system where overhead wires transmit power to the electric trains.
