WMATA, 10/25:

Media Advisory: Metro and local officials to host news conference on SafeTrack surge #10

Metro will host a news conference at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26 to discuss preparations for SafeTrack surge #10, which begins October 29 and will last until November 22. Surge #10 will result in an around-the-clock line segment shutdown between NoMa-Gallaudet and Fort Totten stations. Red Line riders should expect significantly longer wait times and crowding on trains, especially during rush hour due to severe service reductions.

All Red Line riders are encouraged to consider alternate travel options during this surge.

SafeTrack is an accelerated track work plan to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the Metrorail system. Utilizing expanded maintenance time on weeknights, weekends and during midday hours, including 15 “Safety Surges” with long duration track outages, Metro is working to improve safety and reliability and restore the system to a state of good repair.

The Washington Post, 10/26:

SafeTrack comes to Metro’s oldest and busiest line starting this weekend

Red Line riders, who flirted with SafeTrack single-tracking for three weeks in August, are in for a real challenge: The next surge, which begins Saturday, will shut down service along a critical corridor of Metro’s busiest line, the biggest test so far in the yearlong repair program.

Surge No. 10 will suspend service between NoMa-Gallaudet and Fort Totten stations, disrupting an estimated 200,000 daily rush-hour trips for 25 days. Officials say it will snarl travel from end-to-end, shuttering two stations in Northeast for nearly a month and drastically reducing service elsewhere on the Red Line.

Officials warned Wednesday that the surge’s impact will ripple throughout the line — not just in the vicinity of the repairs, which continue through Nov. 22.

MARC Service Alert, 10/28:

Wash Metro Red Line: reduced capacity starting Monday, consider alternatives to avoid crowding

Washington Metro service on the Red Line will be significantly disrupted starting next Monday through Tuesday, November 22, to allow for SafeTrack Surge #10, a major rebuilding program. There will be no Red Line service between NoMa-Gallaudet and Fort Totten stations, and trains will run less frequently at all other Red Line stations, including Union Station.

MARC customers who connect from the Penn Line to Metro at Union Station may experience significant crowding and longer waits for trains.

Passengers are reminded that they can transfer to Metro at New Carrollton (Penn Line) or Greenbelt/College Park (Camden Line) and avoid the reduced service on the Red Line. If you must travel into Union Station, consider local bus service, such as the DC Circulator, Washington Metrobus routes 96, D6 and X1, and walking or biking to reach your final destination.
