Ann Arbor officials are moving full steam ahead with a study that will look closely at options for building a new Amtrak station in the city.

The City Council voted 11-0 early Tuesday morning to approve an $824,875 contract with URS Corp. to undertake the so-called Ann Arbor Station Environmental Review, which includes public engagement, site selection and conceptual design.

Of course ideally a "Union Station" at the point where the Amtrak and future WALLY lines cross would be most ideal, but I don't think the parties are working together on that. WALLY may be a rush hour-only operation at least from the start, so the benefits would be limited.

415 W. Washington leads list of possible sites for downtown commuter rail station

Where along the train tracks that pass through downtown Ann Arbor would you like to see a commuter rail station?

Right now the leading candidate is a city-owned property at 415 W. Washington St., but local officials want more input before making a final decision.

And they're still looking. From Ann Arbor, MI News, 6/9/14:

Future train station in Ann Arbor: City working to narrow down list of potential sites

The city of Ann Arbor has announced a series of meetings in June to continue a public dialogue about a new Amtrak station in the city.

Story is here. I don't see any mention of a station also accommodating the proposed WALLY commuter rail line.

Ann Arbor officials say decision on new train station site coming soon

The city of Ann Arbor and its consultants are nearing the completion of an extensive review of alternative locations for a new Amtrak station in the city.

Within the next 30 to 45 days, a preferred site will be recommended by the city's project team, said Eli Cooper, the city's transportation program manager.

About two dozen people attended a public meeting at city hall Wednesday morning to hear an update on the work that's been done over the last six months.

Ann Arbor mayor makes new case for train station in Fuller Park

ANN ARBOR, MI - Mayor Christopher Taylor says he still thinks Fuller Park would be the best place to build a new Amtrak station in Ann Arbor.

In a new 2016 year-in-review letter shared via email and social media this week, Taylor argued the current station on Depot Street cannot handle a material increase in ridership from either expanded Amtrak service or the introduction of a commuter rail service between Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Taylor reveals the city also has received new information from external traffic engineers in connection with the site-assessment process.

Taylor said the city has submitted a draft report to the Federal Railroad Administration to assess the location that best meets federal standards, though federal officials have not signed off on it yet.

"This process has been incredibly frustrating," he writes. "We are (and have been!) working hard to obtain FRA approval for this report and to contract out for preliminary engineering before what we believe to be a May 2017 grant funding deadline. This delay has reduced my confidence in this project moving forward in the short term."

A look at train ridership as Ann Arbor considers $2.4M next step on new station

ANN ARBOR, MI - In making a case for building a new Amtrak station in Ann Arbor, Mayor Christopher Taylor suggested earlier this month there could be a dramatic increase in train ridership in the years ahead.

Specifically, he said, ridership through Ann Arbor, meaning people getting on and off trains here, could increase from roughly 150,000 trips per year to more than 1 million per year by 2030, an estimate some are deeply skeptical about.
