Chapter 11: Getting home from the Fest

Jishnu flew home, while others completed their journeys by train. Kim and Mike took Saturday evening's Capitol Limited to Cleveland, while later that evening, Grace and Alan departed to New York City on the Lake Shore Limited.

My travels continued, but with much more success. I had planned a Saturday evening Amtrak round trip on the Illini to Rantoul, but given my bad luck a week prior with other connections, I decided against it. Instead, I used the Metra Weekend Pass I already had from that morning's trip to go up to Evanston for dinner and dessert. After staying a second night in Chicago, I took my Detroit side trip, eastbound Sunday on Amtrak's midday Wolverine Service train. Monday I rode the Detroit People Mover and the new Q-Line Streetcar, and then returned westbound to Chicago on the midday westbound Wolverine Service. That evening I left Chicago on the Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited, arriving in Worcester, MA on Tuesday night. Wednesday I rode the nonstop MBTA commuter train from Worcester to Boston, took an Acela Express to Philadelphia, and finally returned on NJ TRANSIT to Cherry Hill, then drove home -- ending what was for me a 14-day journey.

Chapter 12: Conclusion

A big thanks to Steve Weagant for his help with Chapters 3 and 4 of this report, which I was unable to capture first hand. Despite my misfortunes of missing 25% of it, our eight-day Fest was another success. The Kansas City visit along with the tour went very well, and our time was well spent in St. Louis as well. We accomplished a lot in Dallas over parts of three days. All three may rate a revisit within several years, as the RideKC Streetcar may be extended both to the north and south of its current route. The Delmar Loop Trolley in St. Louis will be running sometime in 2018. And further extensions of the trolley and streetcar routes in Dallas (including connecting the two), and future changes to DART light rail downtown, will beckon us back there once more.

As MTRF drew to a close, we knew we would be meeting again in six months in either Boston or New York, determined by a few rail projects in New England that may or may not be complete.
