The Herald-News, Joliet, IL, 10/18/15:

Joliet train station on hold, outlook for commuters unclear
Will ‘Gateway Center’ emerge from construction site?

JOLIET – Phil Andros is a walking example of the challenges in using public transit in Joliet, and often he is running.

“I literally have to run from the bus to catch the train,” the Joliet resident said.

The Joliet Gateway Center, the project designed to build a new train and bus station and put assorted modes of public transit into one location, has come to a near standstill because of budget overruns and a state mandate that, Joliet officials say, prevents work from going forward.

The Herald-News, Joliet, IL, 1/19:

State gives Joliet tentative approval to move ahead with train station

JOLIET – The city expects to resume work on a new train station after getting tentative approval from the state to award bids on the project, Joliet officials announced Monday.

“We anticipate the final approval will come at the end of the month,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said Tuesday as he announced the news at the City Council meeting.

Joliet council to vote on train station bid – 'finally'

JOLIET – Joliet again has the go-ahead to build a new train station.

The City Council is slated to vote Tuesday on a $16 million contract with Walsh Construction to build the station and a new platform for the Heritage Corridor train.

The price has gone up $400,000 since the state put the brakes on the project in the summer.

The Herald-News, Joliet, IL 10/8/16:

Yes, Joliet, a train station is being built

Announced in 2010, station to open in late 2017

JOLIET – It won’t be long now, relatively speaking, until the new train station is built in downtown Joliet.

The project has been in the works for six years.

But construction is starting in a few weeks, and the station is expected to open by the end of 2017.

Local, regional and state officials gathered Friday for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the commencement of the latest phase of the project.

The Herald-News, Joliet, IL 10/10:

Joliet may make new connections with train station

JOLIET – The future Joliet train station may be behind schedule, but its potential significance has not been forgotten.

The groundbreaking ceremony last week brought the state transportation secretary and Metra executive director to Joliet, signs that the upgrade of the public transit facilities matter beyond the city limits.

“It shows commitment to invest in transportation not only for people in Joliet, but for travelers in the Chicago region,” Metra Executive Director Don Orseno said of the $50 million project.

The Chicago connection also was noticed by a company that Joliet officials hope to bring to the city, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

Metra news release:

Joliet to open new Heritage Corridor center platform Feb. 12

(February 7, 2018) - The new Heritage Corridor platform will open to the public on Monday, February 12, 2018. This new raised brick paver platform is located between the tracks for boarding of Amtrak or Metra Heritage Corridor trains on either side. Access to the platform is thru two new pedestrian tunnels. The main entrance for the south tunnel is thru the portico entrance of the new train station located on Mayor Art Schultz Drive between Washington Street and Jefferson Street. The station building itself is not open to the public, only the tunnel. The north tunnel entrance is located on Mayor Art Schultz Drive between Van Buren Street and Clinton Street.

Both tunnels have stairs and an elevator for ADA access to the new platform. Both Amtrak and Metra ticket trailers are still open for ticket sales.

Mayor Art Schultz Drive between Van Buren Street and Clinton Street has been reopened to vehicular traffic. When dropping off or waiting to pick up at this location please ensure that your vehicle is in a designated parking area and not blocking thru traffic.

Mayor Art Schultz Drive south of Jefferson is still closed to vehicles north of the alley. The parking lot at the corner of Mayor Art Schultz Drive and Jefferson Street is not yet available for public use. Portions of the lot, sidewalks, and street are still signed and fenced as active construction zones. Use caution and watch for activity when walking or driving in this area.

The temporary Heritage Corridor wooden platform, stairs, and ramp will be permanently closed. The structure will be removed entirely this spring.

There will be additional sidewalk sign panels to direct pedestrians to the new tunnel entrance points.

These changes have no impact on the Metra Rock Island Line facilities or users.

For additional information, contact the City of Joliet Department of Public Works at 815-724-4200.
