Chicago Tribune, 9/27/16:

CTA Wilson station rehab moves into next phase

For anyone nostalgic for the filthy old CTA Wilson station and platform — it's now too late to enjoy their dubious splendors.

Starting this week, CTA customers can no longer use the station or platform that's been in use since 1923, CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase said. Riders instead will be directed to a new platform and temporary entrances built as part of an ongoing $203 million rehabilitation project, now more than half complete.

The CTA will announce Tuesday that the project, started in 2014, has moved into its third phase and the entire reconstruction will be completed toward the end of 2017.

The station and the more than 100-year-old track structure are being rebuilt, creating a new transfer point between the Red and Purple lines.

Last Tuesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CTA officials announced that the immense, $203 million reconstruction of the Wilson Red Line Staton had reached its halfway point. Ultimately, the stop will become a new transfer point between Red and Purple Lines; and after the current third phase of construction begins, the historic Uptown stop will feature a rebuilt track structure and fully renovated station house.

Two days prior to that press conference, on Sunday, Sept. 25, local photographer Matt Tuteur was able to slip into the site and document the surroundings—including the decades-dormant substation and the old, unused platform. Tuteur has shared his photographs of the historic space with Chicagoist, which you can see in the gallery above. (Note: Trespassing on restricted area is illegal, so please don't try to follow suit.)

CTA news release:

CTA Seeks Tenant for New Wilson Station

4/7/2017

As part of the $203 million Wilson Station Reconstruction Project, CTA is restoring the station’s famous Gerber Building built in 1923 at Broadway and Wilson and will be available for lease

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) today kicked off a search for a new developer or retailer for the Wilson Station’s historic 1923 Gerber Building, which is being completely restored as part of the signature Wilson Station Reconstruction Project. At the corner of Wilson and Broadway, the Gerber Building is one of Uptown’s most recognizable structures and the restoration is returning it to a fully functional building while respecting its unique architectural legacy.

Under the leadership of Mayor Emanuel, CTA began the Wilson project in 2014, which is replacing a nearly 100-year-old station and tracks with a new, fully accessible station that will serve as a transfer point between Red and Purple Line Express trains. A key part of the project is also the restoration of the 94-year-old Gerber Building. The entire project will be completed by the end of 2017 and the Gerber Building will be available for occupancy in January 2018.

“The Wilson Station reconstruction is creating a modern, 21st century transit station in the heart of Uptown,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter Jr. “With the restoration of the Gerber Building, our goal is to create a new anchor for economic development in the neighborhood.”

The Gerber Building, located at 4620 N. Broadway, is a long, one-story Beaux Arts-style building that formerly functioned as the primary entrance to the elevated Wilson Red Line station. Prior to the Wilson Station Reconstruction Project, the building was underutilized due to its age and need for utility upgrades. The restoration is restoring the façade to its original 1923 appearance, preserving its historic character while also adapting the interior for a new use.

The restoration includes rehabilitation and cleaning of terra cotta masonry, and new storefronts, doors, and exterior lighting that are consistent and compatible with its historical appearance. The overhaul will include an auxiliary entrance to the Wilson station. Efforts by both the design and construction team have sought to maximize the retention of original building fabric, and maintain the original design intent of the building. Once completed, the building includes approximately 13,200 square feet of interior space available for lease.

The Wilson station serves 1.9 million annual riders. As part of the competitive bid process, CTA is seeking a long-term partner that will complement the Uptown neighborhood and the investments that CTA is making in the Wilson station. CTA news release:

CTA Opens New, Modern Main Stationhouse at Wilson

10/4/2017

$203 million Wilson Station Reconstruction Project is rebuilding nearly century old station; CTA opens new main Wilson stationhouse today

The Chicago Transit Authority today opened the newly rebuilt main stationhouse at the Wilson station to customers, a major milestone in a $203 million reconstruction project of the entire station and track structure.

Serving as the main entrance to the Wilson Station, this modern, bright stationhouse has opened early to the public as part of Mayor Emanuel’s promise to the Uptown community to open the new Wilson Station as early as possible, including completing one of the new elevators early.

“Mayor Emanuel and I are pleased to provide ahead of schedule this bright, spacious new entrance to Wilson, which will provide our customers with a more pleasant commuting experience and increased accessibility to the CTA system,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. “The reconstructed station will also be an economic catalyst for the Uptown neighborhood by providing convenient access to this vibrant, historic neighborhood while attracting new businesses and stimulating job growth.”

The new main stationhouse offers elevator and escalator access for the first time, wider station platforms with large, translucent canopies to provide better weather protection and additional turnstiles. Additional station features include real-time Train Tracker train arrival time displays, new signage (including Braille) and bright lighting.

The new Wilson station also provides a more pleasant street-level environment with a reduction in the number of track columns at street- and sidewalk-level to improve the area under the station for pedestrians and local businesses and increase visibility for vehicular and bicycle traffic.

“We have already seen the positive economic impact made by rebuilding the Wilson Station,” said Alderman James Cappleman. “Our neighborhood has seen many new businesses open, as well as several new residential developments planned, as a direct result of this incredible project.”

Announced by Mayor Emanuel in 2012, the Wilson Station project is part of $8 billion of transit investment since 2011 begun, completed or announced by Mayor Emanuel.

CTA will complete the rest of the Wilson reconstruction project by year’s end. That includes:

  • Completing remaining project work at the new main stationhouse and opening a new northbound platform
  • Opening new station entrances on Sunnyside Avenue and on the north side of Wilson Avenue
  • Unveiling new station artwork created by Cecil Balmond, a world-renowned artist, designer and engineer known for his large-scale public art installations around the world.
  • Beginning Purple Line stops and transfers between Red and Purple Line trains at Wilson for the first time
  • Complete restoration of the historic 94-year-old Gerber building that is part of the Wilson station at Broadway and Wilson and announcing a new tenant for the building

The Wilson project is part of Mayor Emanuel’s “Red Ahead” program to revitalize the entire Red Line, which is CTA’s busiest and forms the backbone of Chicago’s transit system. Other Red Line projects under way include the Red and Purple Modernization Program, the new 95th Street Terminal, and the proposed extension of the Red Line south to 130th Street.

While many cities focused on building new transit systems, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has been intensely focused on modernizing and improving its bus and rail system across Chicago. Since 2011, the CTA has announced, begun, or completed more than $8 billion in projects, a level of investment unprecedented in CTA history.

One of the signature projects in that effort has been a $203 million reconstruction of the CTA’s Wilson Red Line station on the city’s North Side, which replaced century-old track structure, built a brand new stationhouse, and created a new rail transfer point.

With the signature project nearly completed by the end of 2017, the CTA in the Fall of 2017 opened its new, modern, and fully accessible Wilson stationhouse, a bright, airy station.

“This modern, spacious new entrance to Wilson gives CTA customers a more pleasant commuting experience and increased accessibility to the CTA system,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter Jr. “The reconstructed station is already an economic catalyst for the historic Uptown neighborhood of Chicago by providing convenient access to this vibrant, historic neighborhood while attracting new businesses and stimulating job growth.

SNIP

.  .  .  At least 30 new business licenses have been issued within a half-mile of the station since project work began.

Demonstrating that quality transit stations encourage development, 11 new multi-family housing development projects, totaling more than 1,300 units, have been announced, approved, or built since Wilson station construction began in late 2014.
