UPDATED: 8:30 PM, Sunday, Feb. 7

Port Authority will resume bus service Monday morning on more than 100 routes but anticipates slower travel times, delays and other unanticipated issues related to the recent winter storm.

Bus service will not be restored Monday morning to nearly 60 other routes due to weather-related issues throughout our service area.

Buses will start Monday on a regular weekday schedule. We anticipate buses will experience difficulties on many routes, causing delays that could impact later trips. We recommend riders take this into consideration when planning travel on Monday.

If riders encounter a stop or station that is not accessible due to snow, they should "flag" the bus driver by waving.

The T remains shut down and officials are working to overcome several weather-related issues tonight. We anticipate knowing by midnight if the T will be operating by the morning rush hour. We will post that information here and make local media aware of its status.

Service to the Mon Incline was restored Sunday morning and it is expected to be in service on Monday morning.

We will continue to provide updates about bus and light rail service on this web site, on our Twitter site and through local media.

Bus & T Service Status for Monday, Feb. 8

UPDATED: 10 AM, MONDAY, FEB. 8

Port Authority resumed bus service this morning on more than 100 routes and on its T light rail system.

Buses are experiencing delays throughout our system as driving conditions are poor. Riders should anticipate slower travel times, delays and other unanticipated issues related to the recent winter storm.

The T only is serving the First Avenue Station in Downtown. It is not able to serve Steel Plaza or Wood Street stations due to a power issue. Bus shuttles are operating between temporary stops located outside of the stations.

Several Park and Ride lots are not accessible this morning due to snow.

The Mon Incline is operating today.

The Wabash HOV lanes are shut down today.

Bus service was not restored this morning to nearly 60 other routes due to weather-related issues throughout our service area. We continue monitoring efforts by public works crews to clear roads and as more routes become available, we will update this page.

If riders encounter a stop or station that is not accessible due to snow, they should "flag" the bus driver by waving.

We will continue to provide updates about bus and light rail service on this web site, on our Twitter site and through local media.

Bus & T Service Status for Tuesday, Feb. 9

UPDATED: 10 PM, MONDAY, FEB. 8

Port Authority plans to restore more bus routes on Tuesday morning and resume T service to Steel Plaza and Wood Street stations.

All but 22 bus routes will be providing service by Tuesday morning and snow has been cleared from all but two Park and Ride lots (Mt. Lebanon and Olympia, in McKeesport).

Thirty-nine bus routes will be detoured from their regular routes or not be able to provide service into some areas where roads are not yet passable. Route-by-route details are listed below.

We recommend riders anticipate slow travel and delays during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

Also on Tuesday morning:

* The Mon Incline will be in service.
* The 52 Allentown light rail route will not provide service nor will a bus shuttle be provided - parts of the route are impassable and stranded vehicles are blocking portions of the line.

* The Wabash HOV lanes will remain closed.

We will continue to provide updates on service on this web site, our Twitter site and through local media.

Bus & T Service Status - Weather Updates

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

UPDATED: 3:45 PM
Next update: 4:30 PM

About 90 percent of Port Authority's bus and T routes are in service, although multiple routes have been detoured and delayed today.

The additional snowfall overnight has caused issues with many bus routes, causing delays through the morning. Some delays were up to 30-45 minutes during the rush hour. All known changes are posted below.

Riders should anticipate delays through the day and the possibility of unanticipated route changes.

The T system has experienced very few difficulties this morning and is serving Downtown stations (except Gateway, which is under construction). The Hampshire stop is not being served this afternoon because excessive snow has been piled up at the stop during local plowing. The situation is not safe for riders.

An overview of Port Authority's current service levels:

Bus service: about 20 routes remain out of service.

The T: operating on a regular schedule and providing normal service to Downtown stations (except Gateway, which is closed during construction). Hampshire stop is not being served. The 52 Allentown light rail route is not operating.

Mon Incline: in service.

Wabash HOV: closed.

Thursday, Feb. 11, Bus & T Status

Most Port Authority bus and T routes will be in service Thursday morning, although many continue to follow detours around snow-covered streets.

Nearly 20 routes remain out of service due to poor road conditions in those areas. Riders of routes providing service Thursday morning still should anticipate delays.

The T system experienced few difficulties on Wednesday and is serving Downtown stations (except Gateway, which is under construction). The Hampshire stop was not being served Wednesday evening as snow had accumulated from plowing and created an unsafe condition for customers.

An overview of Port Authority's service levels for Thursday:

Bus service: less than 20 routes remain out of service.

The T: operating on a regular schedule and providing normal service to Downtown stations (except Gateway, which is closed during construction). Hampshire stop is not being served. The 52 Allentown light rail route is not operating.

Mon Incline: in service.

Wabash HOV: closed.

Friday, Feb. 12, Bus & T Status

Multiple bus routes will continue to operate on detours on Friday and about 10 routes will remain out of service as Port Authority continues to recover from the recent winter storms.

Road conditions continue to improve across our service area, although some streets remain unusable. Some sidewalks, transit stops and stations also are snow-covered, creating difficulties for riders.

As a result, riders should continue to anticipate delays through Friday.

An overview of Port Authority's service levels for Friday:

Bus service: About 10 routes remain out of service. Multiple routes continue to operate with detours or limited service areas.

The T: operating on a regular schedule and providing normal service to Downtown stations (except Gateway, which is closed during construction). The Hampshire stop reopened on Thursday after being closed due to snow accumulation caused by plowing. The 52 Allentown light rail route will not operate (the nearby 46K Knoxville bus route is a possible alternative).

Mon Incline: in service.

Wabash HOV: open.

I-279 HOV: PennDOT plans to reopen the lanes by Friday morning.

Fifth Avenue bus lane in Oakland: closed, service detoured to Forbes Avenue.

Today is the first day since the storms of 2 weeks ago that #52 Allentown LRT service is running. Apparently it took this long to remove snow that was piled upon the ROW. Ironically, it's another snowy day but so far everything seems to be running smoothly:

Bus & T Service for Thursday, Feb. 25

Thursday, February 25, 2010
UPDATED: 3:20 PM

Thursday, Feb. 25 Bus & T Service

New detours and delays may also arise if conditions change due to additional snowfall.

A list of bus and T routes that are out of service, or on a detour, is posted below.

An overview of Port Authority's service levels for Thursday:

Bus service: Multiple routes continue to operate with detours or limited service areas.

The T: All lines except are operating on a regular schedule and providing normal service to Downtown stations (except Gateway, which is closed during construction).

Mon Incline: In service.

Wabash HOV: Open (when applicable).

I-279 HOV: Open (when applicable).

Fifth Avenue Bus Lane in Oakland: Open.

Well now that didn't last very long...

Packed snow is impacting the 52 Allentown line. The 4:50 pm inbound trip and the 5:07 pm outbound trip are out of service.

My guess is that the plow operators are putting snow on the ROW and the city doesn't act to change that, or else the snow is just building up due to inactivity. Here's a novel idea... run the cars all day, instead of just rush hours, and snow have a chance won't build up on the tracks. Surely the LRT would run better than the parallel bus route in this type of weather. I'm sure this doesn't happen on the lines through Beechview and Overbrook, which run on 15 minute or better headways all day.
