OMG!  Seems like a nightmare scenario.  Some of us are hoping to see renewed passenger use of the Stampede Pass line.  Decades ago, before the superliner cars were procured and used on western long-distance trains, the empire Builder used the Stampede Pass route.  I took it once, back about 1978 or so.  The tunnel floor would have to be lowered to allow for use of higher and bi-level cars.  Stack freight trains cannot use it at present.  But the article is worrisome when it comes to focusing blame for bad incidents and meting out justice.

From the Seattle Times.

Here BNSF is so cautious when there are mudslides, imposing a 48 hour ban on passenger trains after a slide happens (despite still being able to operate their own freight trains), and they were apparently caught by surprise in sending trains through a blizzard, to hit trees and get stuck in an exhaust filled tunnel.

The hearing follows the Dec. 18 Amtrak Cascades derailment near Nisqually that killed three passengers and revived political interest in safety.

I am not sure though why this article mentions the December Amtrak wreck in Nisqually -- one has nothing to do with the other.
