NY-1 TV, New York, NY, 1/20/15:

Smart Phones, Credit Cards to Replace MTA's MetroCard Payment Method

It's been nearly 12 years since the token took its last drop, giving way to the MetroCard.

You'll eventually be saying "so long" to the swipe, though. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning to introduce a new way of paying your fare—by using a smart phone, or a credit card.

"Primarily, it's going to be a system that has customers tapping a device at a turnstile or on a bus at which there would be a reader," says the MTA's Michael DeVitto.

Second Avenue Sagas, 1/20/15:

MetroCard replacement still five years away, says MTA Board docs

Now that the MTA Board committee materials officially recognize that the 7 line extension won’t open until at least the 2nd quarter of 2015 (something we knew last month), we can move onto another project that is oft- and again-delayed: the MetroCard replacement. According to the latest Capital Program Oversight Committee materials, the MTA’s next-gen fare payment system won’t be ready until 2020 if all goes according to plan. Systemwide rollout won’t wrap until 2022 under the current schedule.

The MTA’s new fare payment system will be called OMNY – short for One Metro New York – and agency employees will test out the new contactless cards starting next week, according to a memo sent to workers.

The pilot program being offered to MTA workers is the first major step toward the agency’s move to its new fare system – which they expect will replace the MetroCard within a few years.

Tap & Go? MTA Will Soon Let Riders Test Out New Way to Pay Fare

NEW YORK - Transit riders will soon get the chance to ditch the swipe, and tap their way onto a train or bus.

By the end of May, the MTA will begin its first large-scale test of its replacement for the MetroCard.

They're calling the system OMNY, for One Metro New York.

"It will do everything that a MetroCard can do, and as we roll out the system it will be able to do more," Wayne Lydon, the director of fare payment programs for the MTA.

The MTA showcased the new technology at its monthly board meeting Wednesday.

Bloomberg, 5/22/19:

NYC Subway’s New Way to Pay Has Banks in a Rush to Update Cards

  • Visa says number of tap-to-pay cards will triple next year
  • JPMorgan is a leader, with 20 million contactless cards issued

New Yorkers won’t have to worry much longer about perfecting their subway swipe.

More than 20 years after the initial switch to MetroCards from tokens, the Metropolitan Transit Authority is unveiling the ability to use tap-to-pay credit and debit cards for subway and bus fares. And it’s not just public transportation. Visa Inc. says 80 of the top 100 U.S. retailers now accept the cards, with companies including Target Corp. and CVS Health Corp. adding the technology in recent months.

“Mass transit is a really terrific use case for tap and pay -- people commute 10 times a week,” Visa Chief Executive Officer Al Kelly said in a Bloomberg Television interview. “It gets them in the habit of using the card to tap and go.”

The transition has prompted banks around the country to quickly update cards. JPMorgan Chase & Co. was the first major lender to commit to tap-and-go technology for its entire portfolio of credit and debit cards, in November, and Bank of America Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co. made similar announcements months later. Outside the U.S., almost half of all in-store transactions use the tapping technology.

Curbed New York, 5/22/19:

A guide to OMNY, the MTA’s new MetroCard-replacing fare system

A pilot for the tap-to-pay technology will launch on May 31

It’s the beginning of the end for the MetroCard.

Starting on May 31, the MTA will launch a pilot program of its new tap-to-pay system, known as OMNY, that will eventually replace swiping a MetroCard. The fare technology will roll out in phases, allowing transit officials to iron out the kinks as they work toward fully retiring the MetroCard in 2023.

The transit authority is starting with 16 subway stations on the 4, 5, and 6 lines in Manhattan and Brooklyn between Grand Central-42 Street and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center; riders will also be able to try out OMNY on all Staten Island buses. The system will function on a full-fare, pay-per-ride basis until every subway station, bus route, and the Staten Island Railway is outfitted with the new tap-and-go tech by late 2020; Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North will follow in early 2021. The goal is for OMNY to be commuters’ passport to the New York region across all of the MTA-controlled subway, buses, and commuter rail lines.

Whether you’re eager to embrace OMNY or aim to stick with the MetroCard for as long as possible, here’s what you need to know about the new payment system.
