Santa Ana streetcar could spark new era of mass transit in O.C

A proposed Santa Ana streetcar route, to run from downtown to the edge of Garden Grove, could become the first leg of a countywide rail system that would change how residents get around.

It also could highlight a long-running argument about how best to run local mass transit – by bus or streetcar.

Opinion in Orange County Register, Anaheim, CA, 5/10/17:

Streetcar not good use of federal funds

Good money after bad keeps heading toward the Santa Ana streetcar. Last week, it was announced that the $298 million, 4.1-mile route was slated for $50 million in congressional funding. The Orange County Transportation Authority sees this as an indicator of federal support for the project, which the transportation agency is hoping the feds bankroll to the tune of $148 million in total.

The Orange County (CA) Register, 8/28/18:

OCTA is seeking public input on how the OC Streetcar vehicles should look

Three variations of orange, white and blue paint schemes are being considered for Orange County’s first streetcar system.

Board members of the Orange County Transportation Authority got a look on Monday at four proposed designs for the $400 million OC Streetcar that is expected to be running in Santa Ana and Garden Grove by 2021.

One design that used a lot of white around the skirt of the electric streetcars was rejected because of the potential for higher painting and maintenance cost. The other three designs will be shown to the community in upcoming workshops.
