The item about Amtrak operating in snow amidst the recent blizzard reminds me of a feature article in 2011 fourth quarter issue of Passenger Train Journal. The feature, titled "How the L&N Saved Christmas," recounts the adventure of family due to arrive Christmas Eve 1962 in Columbia, TN (near Alabama border.)  Heavy snow closed roads and airports, but Louisville & Nashville (later merged into Seaboard Coast Line and then gobbled up by CSX) was on time from its departure point, Memphis, TN.  The family boarded the crowded train in Nashville which then took them to Columbia.  Unfortunately, when the family was ready to return to Nashville a few days later, the L&N had ceased passenger service.

Ah, those were the days when railroads had "can-do" spirit."   ;)  Sloan
