Weekend service adjustments May 29-31 for rebuilding

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of May 29-31 with service adjustments on five of six rail lines beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday.

This weekend, Yellow Line trains will operate regular weekend service between Huntington & Fort Totten. Green Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between College Park and Branch Avenue stations; buses will replace trains at Greenbelt Station. Orange, Silver and Blue line trains will operate every 26 minutes and Red Line trains will operate every 10-20 minutes (see below for details).

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.

 Red Line
Trains every 10-20 minutes

Red Line trains will operate as follows throughout the weekend:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont: every 20 minutes
  • Between Friendship Heights & NoMa-Gallaudet: every 10-12 minutes from 9AM-9PM only

Grout pad rehabilitation, ballast, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride will cause Red Line trains to share one track between Medical Center & Grosvenor and between Rhode Island Avenue & Takoma.

 Orange Line
Trains every 26 minutes

Orange Line trains will operate every 26 minutes throughout the weekend.

Orange Line trains will share one track between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon to allow for emergency call box installation, rail tie and insulator renewal for a safer ride.

 Silver Line
Trains every 26 minutes

Silver Line trains will operate every 26 minutes throughout the weekend.

Silver Line trains will share one track between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon to allow for emergency call box installation, rail, tie and insulator renewal for a safer ride.

   Blue Line
Trains every 26 minutes

Blue Line trains will operate every 26 minutes throughout the weekend.

Blue Line trains will share one track between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery to allow for emergency call box installation, rail, tie and insulator renewal for a safer ride.

 Yellow Line
Regular weekend service

Yellow Line trains will operate regular weekend intervals between Huntington & Fort Totten.

 Green Line
Regular service except at Greenbelt Station; Buses replace trains Saturday & Sunday at Greenbelt

Green Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Branch Avenue and College Park.

Stations Closed: Greenbelt

Free shuttle buses will replace Green Line trains between College Park and Greenbelt.

Work Performed: Continued construction of a new test track located between College Park and Greenbelt to accept Metro's new fleet of 7000-series railcars.

Travel Tips

  • Riders who normally use Greenbelt may consider parking at College Park where Green Line trains will provide more frequent service.
  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the "bus only" option.
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.
