I'm a little delayed on this, much because of everything else going on with planning TWO RailFests, an Amtrak schedule change, but nevertheless here is the Plans 2016 thread, a related thought to the Memories 2015 I posted a few weeks ago. We look ahead here, not back, at what lies ahead in the coming year.

First let's review what we mentioned in the Memories 2015 thread, things that didn't happen in 2015 that should take place in 2016:
  • Seattle's First Hill Streetcar line will join the existing South Lake Union line early in the year. (Soft opening happened 1/23/16.) And in the same city, Sound Transit will put a northward extension of LINK light rail into service on March 19th, taking passengers to Capitol Hill and University of Washington. Furthermore, by the end of the year there should also be a southward LINK extension from SeaTac/Airport to Angle Lake.
  • Delmar Loop Trolley is set to go into service sometime in 2016 in the St. Louis area.
  • Expansion of the New Orleans Streetcar system into the French Quarter should occur during 2016.
  • Kansas City Streetcar should be opening in the first few months of the year.
  • LACMTA will open the Gold Line extension from Pasadena to Azusa/Citrus College in early March, and then also sometime in the Spring, the second phase of Expo Line from Century City to Downtown Santa Monica.
Also coming in 2016:
  • September 15, 2016 should be the start date for the first phase of Cincinnati Streetcar.
  • Late in this year, BART should be opening the first phase of southward extension beyond the Fremont station, to Warm Springs.
  • A northern extension of Phoenix Valley Metro light rail from Montebello to Dunlap Avenue is scheduled to be in service by March 2016.
  • Also late in the year, the long awaited extension of MBTA's Fitchburg Line 4.5 miles to Wauchusett should be open.
  • Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) will become the San Francisco area's third commuter rail property as its first phase opens in late 2016 between Santa Rosa and San Rafael.
  • Denver will have three rail project debuts this year. In April it will be the University of Colorado "A" Airport commuter rail line, followed by the "G" commuter rail line to Golden. Later in the year, the "R" light rail line to Aurora will open, as well as service on the currently unused track connection that will bring "R" trains to the "E"/"F" terminus at Lincoln.
  • Much happening in Dallas too. Phase 2 of the Dallas Streetcar will extend the recently opened first phase further south into Oak Cliff. And the South Oak Cliff extension of the Blue Line from Ledbetter to University of North Texas should be open by the end of 2016.
  • In the Spring, New York City's World Trade Center transit hub will open, with connections to the other hub in the area, Fulton Center.
  • Will THIS be the year of the DC Streetcar?? Believe it when you see it, but it's been here on my Plans thread for a few years now.

Me

My goal remains Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Plus, and while it will be harder to accomplish given the change in the rules effective January 24th, I've already been trying to accumulate as many qualifying trips under the old rules which will ease that task of reaching the goal the rest of the year. So far, nothing out of the ordinary has been planned for my personal trips, but these usually develop when the weather is nicer for travel.

OTOL Fests

Our Winter event will be taking place in New York, happening January 15-17. And in the summer, a yet-unnamed event will take place to, from, and within the West Coast as we re-visit three cities to ride lines that were not in service during our 2009 and 2010 trips.

As always, your plans for personal trips, your participation with our group trips, and your goals for the year in riding a particular rail line are all fair game for discussion here!

Updated with now known opening date for Sound Transit LINK to University of Washington, and the fact First Hill Streetcar had soft opening on 1/23/16.
