WMATA news release, 2/24:

Metro begins major installation of cable in 100 miles of tunnel to improve radio, wireless technology coverage

Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld today announced the start of a major capital improvement project to install radio cable along 100 miles of tunnel walls throughout the underground rail system that will result in vastly improved radio coverage for Metro and the region's first responders, as well as wireless technology coverage within Metro's tunnels.

Engineering and production tests are already underway in a 6,000 foot tunnel segment between Glenmont and Forest Glen in order to develop project design specifications. At Wiedefeld’s direction, an outside expert was engaged this week to review Metro’s design and implementation plan to maximize the delivery of benefits and to accelerate the project schedule.

“We are looking for every opportunity to move this project along efficiently and to deliver incremental benefits as we complete each segment and turn it over to the telecom providers,” said Wiedefeld.

Thanks to a new agreement with the major wireless carriers, the project will be advanced using Metro-managed workers thereby yielding cost and efficiency benefits. Specifically, Metro will install the necessary cable for both cellular and radio systems at the same time.

Metro will install dual radio and cellular cables—known as coaxial—on the walls in 100 miles of tunnel. The process involves carefully installing special trays into the tunnel walls to support the heavy cables, which are two-inches thick, and relocating thousands of reflective signs that are currently affixed to the tunnel walls.  The system will be easier to maintain than the current radio system as critical equipment is moved to where it can be accessed at all times without track outages.

“Many partners are supporting Metro’s effort to deliver these improvements, and I want to thank Metro’s Congressional delegation, Congressman John Mica and the Council of Governments especially for their leadership,” said Wiedefeld.

To date, all Metrorail stations have been equipped with wireless technology infrastructure that is owned, operated and maintained by the wireless carriers.

Metro must design and test the engineering of the project to set a schedule for an unprecedented installation of 200 miles of cable, which breaks down to 100 miles of tunnel multiplied by two coaxial cables.  If stretched over highways, the approximate length of cable would extend from Washington, D.C. to New York City.

In order to minimize the impact to normal Metrorail operations, the installation work will be done in coordination with other capital projects at night and on the weekends.

At an estimated cost of $120 million, the underground portion of the work will be funded through Metro’s capital improvement program.

WMATA news release, 4/19/17:

Metro announces wireless voice and data service activation in first Red Line tunnel segment; Wi-Fi service coming to 30 stations by end of 2017

Metro and the nation’s leading wireless carriers - AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless - today announced the availability of wireless voice and data service in the first tunnel segment on the Red Line. Metro riders traveling between Glenmont and Silver Spring can now enjoy uninterrupted wireless access when traveling between these stations.

The wireless carriers previously installed wireless service in all of the Metro underground stations. Working together, the latest tunnel segment is the second portion of the system to have wireless service, following the segment between Potomac Avenue and Stadium Armory on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, which was activated in December 2016. As a result of the new wireless coverage announced today, a Metro customer can now travel from Glenmont to Silver Spring with an uninterrupted wireless signal.

Metro is installing special cable along 100 miles of tunnel walls to support wireless service as the transit agency also installs the infrastructure needed for a new radio system for trains and emergency responders.

“Customers have told us that they want the ability to stay connected while on Metro, and we are pleased to have worked with the wireless carriers to deliver this service,” said Metro GM/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld. “I look forward to announcing the activation of additional tunnel segments in the months ahead.”

The process of installing the wireless cable in Metro’s tunnels requires weekend track outages to allow crews and contractors to drill special brackets along the walls. Under a new approach that maximizes efficiency, cellular cable is being installed concurrently with Metro’s new radio system. Once the cellular cable is mounted and secured, the cable infrastructure is turned over to the wireless carriers to install the electronics needed to connect and optimize their networks. Wireless service on Metro is funded, operated and maintained jointly by the carriers.

Also today, Metro announced a list of 30 underground stations that will have free customer Wi-Fi service by the end of the year. Currently, six stations already have Wi-Fi – Metro Center, Gallery Place, L’Enfant Plaza, Judiciary Square, and Archives. The additional 24 stations are:

  • Smithsonian
  • Farragut West
  • Crystal City
  • Dupont Circle
  • Rosslyn
  • Clarendon
  • Court House
  • Navy Yard-Ballpark
  • Waterfront
  • Anacostia
  • McPherson Sq
  • Foggy Bottom-GWU
  • Farragut North
  • Cleveland Park
  • Van Ness-UDC
  • Tenleytown - AU
  • Friendship Heights
  • Bethesda
  • Medical Center
  • Mt. Vernon Sq
  • Shaw-Howard U
  • U Street
  • Columbia Heights
  • Federal Center SW

Metro will announce Wi-Fi availability as each station is activated. All remaining underground stations will have Wi-Fi by mid-2018.

Metro's Wi-Fi service is in addition to existing cellular service (already available at all Metro stations) enabling customers to make calls, send text messages, and access the web.

Metro, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless announce wireless service now available in two-thirds of tunnels systemwide

Metro and the nation’s leading wireless carriers, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless announce that as of today approximately two-thirds of Metro’s tunnels are now wired for cellular and data service. This marks the near completion of underground wireless service in Virginia, with the addition of the newest tunnel segments on the Yellow and Blue lines that are “wireless ready.”

Customers aboard trains between Rosslyn and Van Dorn Street/Eisenhower Avenue can now check emails, send messages and perform other functions using voice and data service underground. Work will continue by the wireless carriers to make adjustments that will enhance the underground wireless network and maximize coverage. Only one short tunnel segment in Virginia remains, between Tysons Corner and Greensboro on the Silver Line.

With the completion of the latest segment, wireless voice and data service is now available on tunnel portions of all six Metrorail lines covering approximately 67 miles of Metro’s 100 miles of tunnel track, including the entire Orange and Blue lines, most of Northern Virginia and Downtown DC.

As of today the following Metrorail tunnel segments have wireless coverage:

-Red Line Union Station - Dupont Circle, Glenmont - Silver Spring

-Blue Line Pentagon - Van Dorn Street; Rosslyn - Largo Town Center; Rosslyn - Arlington Cemetery; and Arlington Cemetery - Pentagon

-Orange Line Silver Line Ballston - Stadium-Armory

-Yellow Line Pentagon - Eisenhower Avenue and Gallery Place - Fort Totten

-Green Line Gallery Place - College Park

The $120 million capital project to install dual radio and cellular cables within Metro’s tunnels began in February 2016 and is scheduled to be completed by June 2020. The labor-intensive process involves installing special trays on the tunnel walls to support the heavy cables and requires the track be taken out of service for the work to be done.

Metro is equipped for cellular service in all 47 underground stations and free public Wi-Fi in 65 underground and above ground stations. By June, Metro expects to have Wi-Fi available at the 26 remaining above ground stations.

WMATA press release

For immediate release: December 6, 2019
Metro, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless announce wireless service now available in all Green line tunnels

Metro and the nation’s leading wireless carriers - AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless - today announced wireless service is now available on the entire length of the Green Line and most of the Yellow Line, following activation of the tunnel segments between Gallery Place and Branch Avenue stations.

To date, 80 of Metro’s 100 miles of tunnel track have cellular and data service available for riders to talk, text and stream. With today’s announcement, three Metro lines have complete wireless coverage: Green, Orange and Blue. The three remaining segments - the Red Line from Dupont Circle north to White Flint, the Yellow line from L’Enfant Plaza to the Potomac River portal along with the one-mile Silver Line tunnel in Tysons - are expected to be completed by June 2020.

The cellular project enhances both safety and customer service. In the event of an emergency, customers or employees can communicate with first responders while underground. Riders are also able to make their commutes more productive, allowing them to work, send emails and text messages, watch videos, read the latest news or catch up with friends.

Installing cables in Metro’s tunnels cannot be done with trains in service or while track work is underway. The process involves attaching hundreds of miles of cable in the tunnel to support cellular service and a new public safety radio system being installed concurrently. The cellular, radio, power and fiber optic cables each run the length of the tunnel and tie into cellular and radio network equipment located at various locations.

The $120 million project to wire the tunnels is funded through Metro's Capital Improvement Program and maintained by the wireless carriers. Continued network testing will allow the carriers to optimize voice and data service and ensure reliability for their respective customers.

Cellular service is already available in all underground stations in addition to free public Wi-Fi at all 91 Metrorail stations.
