   Fall River voters have 'a final checkbox' before South Coast Rail trains can start running    

 

 

 

South Coast Rail is running right on schedule with an ETA of late 2023. But before the first commuter train leaves the station for Boston, Fall River voters will need to check one last item off the itinerary.

In November, Fall River voters will be asked a direct question of whether they wish to be added to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, a legal requirement before the opening of the new South Coast Rail passenger service to Boston, set for late 2023.

Fall River has booked its ticket for South Coast Rail, as MBTA membership vote wins

 

FALL RIVER — The South Coast Rail commuter trains will be running on schedule in 2023, as Fall River voters opted to join the MBTA in Tuesday’s election. 

 

According to unofficial results, voters overwhelmingly approved a citywide ballot question to have Fall River join the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, 77.68% to 22.32% — nearly 13,000 voters approved the question, with just under 3,700 rejecting it. 

 

The South Coast Rail project is on schedule to be completed in fall of 2023, providing train service to Boston and points along the Middleboro/Lakeville line.  . . .

With Fall River extension complete, South Coast Rail is on track to open late 2023, Baker and MBTA announce

 

Construction of the Fall River line of the long-awaited South Coast Rail project is finished, and the complete extension is on track to open by late next year, MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said at a Monday press conference at the new Freetown Commuter Rail Station in Assonet.

 

“This is really a historic moment for us, for our current and future South Coast Rail riders,” Poftak said. “We’re still working hard on the New Bedford branch with our friends at [construction companies] Middlesex and Tutor Perini, and look forward to coming back here later next year for the opening of this service.”

 

Governor Charlie Baker, who made completion of the project a cornerstone of his reelection campaign, cut the ribbon for the newly completed Freetown Station on the Fall River line.
