I had the pleasure of visiting the Portola museum last Thursday (4/21). It is an informal and really nice facility. There are lots of old WP cars and locos, plus some other stuff all in varying states of repair. If you are accustomed to the slick presentations at the big name rail museums, the laid back displays at Portola where you just walk around the yard tracks and the shop and look at the cars are a nice counterpoint. It is kind of like the contrast between visiting Robert Mondavi and a small family winery. Both styles are nice in their own ways.
Portola just recently opened for the season after a very tough northern California winter. An architectural design flaw in the old WP building they call home results in the roof snow/ice pack breaking windows each winter, and this year’s late arrival of spring delayed their annual repairs.
Too bad I’m missing the photo day, but for a close-up look at some vintage WP equipment, including the only remaining WP California Zephyr locomotive, I recommend a visit.
