Miami-Dade County news release

Miami-Dade Transit announces service reduction as it continues to prioritize the safety of its riders, employees, and the community

MIAMI ( March 19, 2020 ) — As Miami-Dade County continues to monitor the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) has made the decision to reduce Miami-Dade Transit services starting Friday, March 20. This decision comes as the department continues to prioritize the safety of its transit riders, employees, and the community.

Service adjustments include changes to Metrorail, Metromover, and Metrobus schedules, along with changes in office hours for in-person services. The department continues to urge the community to use public transit for essential trips only.

In an abundance of caution and for the safety of our employees and riders, all weekday transit services will be adjusted starting tomorrow, Friday, March 20. Weekend services will operate as published and will be monitored closely.

Metrorail
Both the Orange Line and the Green Line of the Metrorail system will continue to operate on weekdays, from 5 a.m. to midnight, with a reduced schedule. Metrorail weekend services will operate as published and will be monitored closely.

Metromover
The Metromover will continue to operate from 5 a.m. to midnight with a reduced frequency of 25 percent on weekdays and will be monitored closely to avoid overcrowding of vehicles and stations. Metromover weekend services will operate as published and will be monitored closely.

Metrobus
On weekdays, Miami-Dade Transit’s Metrobus system will continue to run weekday routes across Miami-Dade County with reduced frequencies. Routes with low frequency were not considered for further reduction.

Transit riders are encouraged to follow these COVID-19 prevention tips:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizers with at  least 60% alcohol to help prevent the spread of germs.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve or elbow.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Practice social distancing of at least six feet between people.

  • Stay home when home when you are sick, except to get medical care, and call before heading to a doctor's office or hospital.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

DTPW is also advising riders and employees to follow the guidelines, recommendations, and actions being taken by Miami-Dade County in response to COVID-19.

Miami Herald 3/20/20

Short on hand sanitizer and riders, Miami-Dade is cutting transit in coronavirus crisis

Miami-Dade announced transit cuts to begin Friday morning that will cause longer waits for trains and buses as an agency short on hand sanitizer and facing a ridership plunge tries to keep public transportation moving in the coronavirus crisis.

The county hasn’t been able to deploy hand sanitizer in all of its buses, and this week is awaiting results from a bus driver who is home and under isolation for possible COVID-19 exposure. An agency representative was not immediately available for an update Friday on the test results.

Even before the cuts, Miami-Dade was urging transit riders to stay away unless they had to take “essential” trips.

Scheduled wait times will grow from about five minutes at most stops to 10 minutes during rush hour, and for as long as 30 minutes late at night. Metromover will reduce arrivals by about 25 percent. And buses on dozens of routes will arrive less frequently.

TriRail Trains Running on Regular Schedules Despite Outbreak

Healthcare workers and other essential employees are still able to commute to work in South Florida using mass transit like TriRail and Brightline trains.TriRail connects all three international airports in Palm Beach Broward and Miami Dade, but air travel is down and many people are telecommuting from home. Therefore, the ridership is down to less than 10,000 a day and that means there are less people on the trains. President Trump advised against gatherings of more than 10 people and at this time, according to Steve Abrams, the executive director of Tri-Rail the crowd-size is self regulating on the trains. In fact, trains and buses might actually be a good way to travel right now most are empty enough to make recommended social distancing easy.

SFRTA press release 6/23/20:

June 23, 2020

TRI-RAIL’S NEXT INCREMENTAL TRAIN SERVICE INCREASE SET FOR JUNE 29

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) announced today that it will add four additional trains into Tri-Rail’s schedule on Monday, June 29, 2020. This is the second schedule adjustment since the agency modified the train schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic on March 28, 2020.

“Four additional trains will be inserted into the schedule to expand hourly service during morning and afternoon rush hours,” said Steven Abrams, SFRTA Executive Director. “This will increase our commuters’ options to get to work and home at a reasonable time, and will keep our 5-car train sets intact.”

Tri-Rail continues to run an amended schedule as a result of the pandemic, which will now consist of 26 trains on weekdays with no changes on the 12-train weekend schedule. Tri-Rail trains have been running as 5-car sets since May 22, to assist passengers with social distancing.

All security officers will also start to return on June 29 as part of this phase. G4S security service was reduced along with the amended train schedule, as well as the temporary fare suspensions on March 28. Tri-Rail fares remain suspended until further notice.

“Our June ridership has slowly increased at just about 200 passengers per week, so adding train service helps us absorb more riders and our security officers can assist passengers to keep social distancing,” added Abrams. “We appreciate our passenger’s patience and support during this time as we continue to work to bring more service back as safely as possible.”

The SFRTA continues to monitor daily ridership to determine its next adjustments. The agency also continues to disinfect trains and stations at elevated levels, maintain seats taped off to encourage social distancing and remind passengers onboard and at stations of safety measures to keep in place, including county mask policies.

For the most updated information on Tri-Rail service, please call 1-800-TRI-RAIL (874-7245), visit www.tri-rail.com, or follow Tri-Rail’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
