You mean 8-track tapes are obsolete?SEPTA looking to credit-card type fare system
Tired of using tokens, passes and the old paper tickets punched by a SEPTA employee as you ride the train to Center City?
Well, they are going the way of Beta and 8-track tapes.

Story is here.SEPTA's new electronic "smart card" fare-collection system will be delayed after the agency this week gave companies more time to offer proposals for designing and building the system.
Interesting point in the article is that a SEPTA-based smart card system would be usable on PATCO, as well as NJ TRANSIT lines in the area, including NEC at Trenton, RiverLINE, and the Atlantic City Line. So if NJT gets their own smart card system, which in turn would need to be compatable with NYC Transit, PATH, etc.... Well since this is a Megalopolis, we're really going to need a smart card system that can be used on EVERY transit system in the Northeast, since in some way many are connected.

That ought to complicate matters a bit. But they managed to figure it out with EZ Pass so I guess there is some kind of solution.
A question: I am under the impression that the NY Transit system is a stored value (meaning rhe value is on the card itself) as far as I can gather PATCO is more like EZ PAss where the balance is stored in pATCO (or someone's comuter system) Do they make a card that can do both?

NY by and large is indeed a stored value system, and no I'm not aware of any card that can do both, but the odds are that one is doable. However, since NY has been testing an EzPass type of card also, it's probably academic to worry about making a card that can handle both stored value and central balance systems.
Take care and take trains!

The smart thing to do would be to read this.Bid deadline for SEPTA smart card system extended
SEPTA's "smart-card" fare system won't be coming to a turnstile near you any time soon.
The transit agency has again pushed back the deadline for bids on an electronic system to replace tokens and paper tickets for its buses, subways, trolleys and trains.

Continue.SEPTA moves a step closer to "smart cards"
After months of delay, SEPTA closed the bidding yesterday for a new "smart card" fare system.
Several firms presented proposals for an electronic system to replace tokens and paper tickets for buses, subways, trolleys, and trains.
Firms that said they submitted bids are Affiliated Computer Services Inc. of Dallas and Cubic Corp. of San Diego. Also believed to have submitted a bid is Accenture Inc. of New York. All have been active in producing automated fare systems in other cities.
With the new system, SEPTA passengers would be able to wave a card at a sensor on a turnstile or fare box and be on their way. SEPTA says it wants a system that will allow passengers to use credit cards, prepaid SEPTA cards, and even cell phones to pay for trips.
