Wednesday, February 13, 2013
DART Headquarters Board Room
1401 Pacific Avenue
Dallas, Texas 75202 (at Akard Station)

DART is kicking off Phase II of its Downtown Dallas Transit Improvements Study, referred to as D2, at a Public Meeting, scheduled February 13, 2013. The D2 study is intended to consider alignments for the second light rail line through Downtown Dallas.

Phase I concluded with completion of an Alternatives Analysis/Draft Environmental Impact Statement (AA/DEIS) and a related Public Hearing and Comment Period. Phase II builds on the original effort. In response to comments received, the Study Team has been developing new alternatives and revising Phase I alternatives.

The meeting will begin with an hour-long Open House, followed by a formal presentation. Alternatives and refinements that are being considered for detailed evaluation will be presented. Additionally, the Study Team will review how the Phase II effort is being coordinated with other relevant transportation projects and recently completed downtown plans.

A comment-and-question period will follow the presentation. For additional information, or if you have questions, please contact Chris Walters, DART Community Affairs Representative, at 214-749-3280.

For years, DART's been planning to stick a second rail line downtown, the better to handle the convergence of what is now four separate rail lines. A three-year study was completed back in 2010, and the list of possible routes was whittled down to four alternatives, all traveling through Victory Park and past the Perot Museum en route to the Deep Ellum Station, but each with a different way of making the link.

Progressive Railroading, 6/8/15:

DART seeks public input on new light-rail alignment

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) will host three public hearings next week to solicit feedback on the alignment of a second light-rail route through downtown Dallas.

Known as the D2 Project, the new route is aimed at increasing system capacity, improving operational flexibility and serving new markets, DART officials said on the project's website. The agency's board is expected to select a preferred alignment this summer.

Dallas, TX Morning News, 2/15/16:

Don’t draw conclusions about new DART line from feds’ map

Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s planned second downtown light-rail route took a step closer to qualifying for federal funding last week when the Federal Transit Administration gave it a positive project rating.

One thing stood out in the project profile that FTA released: a map of the line’s alignment.

DART e-mail 7/27/16:

Dear DART Rider,

We've been part of the North Texas community for the past 30 years and we see DART as a part of our region's future as well. That’s why we continue to work with our communities - including riders like you - to come up with the best possible transit solution for our area.

Today, we're sharing with you some of the reasoning behind why we are developing a second alignment (called D2) through downtown Dallas:

What will D2 bring to our community?

 D2 will:

  • Transport even more people who are living in and traveling around downtown Dallas
  • Inject vibrancy and new activity into neighborhoods and areas surrounding the route
  • Bring economic and cultural opportunities to downtown Dallas

What is DART doing to move D2 forward right now?

To bring D2 to life, DART first has to secure federal funding through the Federal Transit Administration and conduct a series of evaluations to refine the project. A Locally Preferred Alternative plan has been approved by DART and the City of Dallas and we are collecting data about the environment, nearby buildings, safety and traffic to help further define where and how D2 will operate.

How can I get involved?

Through the entire process, we are seeking input from stakeholders and the public to ensure we are best balancing the needs of our community members with as little disruption as possible. If you would like to learn more about D2 and the development process, please subscribe to D2 updates and read more on DART Daily. You may also email us with questions or concerns about the project at D2@DART.org. We look forward to serving you in the future.

Sincerely,

The D2 DART Team

P.S. Follow D2's progress on Facebook and Twitter. Use the hashtag #D2will to join the discussion!

"D" Magazine, 8/4/16:

Why the Second Downtown DART Line Should Be a Subway

As a kid, like many I presume, I loved building toy train lines during the holidays. I would build them as long and complex as I could. Or at least as long as the amount of tracks I had and the space my mother would allow.

Dallas, TX Morning News, 8/23/16:

Downtown subway supporters swamp DART board room after officials spent hours wrestling over priorities

More than 200 people showed up to a Dallas Area Rapid Transit meeting Tuesday to persuade transit officials to build a new downtown light-rail line as a subway instead of at street level.

It was one of the largest turnouts in several years as the crowd of residents, business owners and civic leaders made clear that they would not be divided by the various surface lines DART staff members have developed.

This is the latest.
