Service Update for Friday, April 17, 2015

The operation generated another week of steady velocity performance and good fluidity across the network. Total volume moved by the railroad topped 200,000 units for the fifth consecutive week. Despite heavy snow falling in parts of Colorado and Wyoming, favorable spring conditions have remained prevalent across much of the network this week with no service impacts from severe weather.

As we have reported, capital maintenance projects are currently at the height of production across the network. Track maintenance activity has contributed to service interruptions and traffic congestion in Texas and Colorado. These disruptions will continue over the next several weeks until project work begins to wind down. Customers can then expect improved train flows going forward.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending April 14:

Total trains held for the week increased by 7.3 percent to an average of 75.1 versus 70.0 recorded the prior week.

  • Versus the same week last year: better by 65.4%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 27.5%

Total trains on the system was down 2.7 percent from the prior week with an average of 1,622 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 275.9, which is down 2.3 percent from the prior week’s 282.3 MPD.

Locomotive dwell increased by slightly more than 10 percent from the prior week at 19.4 hours.

Car velocity was essentially unchanged at 222.0 MPD versus 222.2 MPD recorded the prior week.

  • Versus the same week last year: better by 21.2%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 6.9%

Train velocity was also essentially unchanged from the prior week at 18.2 miles per hour.

  • Versus the same week last year: up 22.1%
Versus the same week in 2013: up 0.6%

Total volume exceeded 200,000 units for the fifth consecutive week with a strong 200,719 units moved in Week 14 (ending April 11).

Terminal dwell improved by slightly more than two percent to 23.3 hours versus 23.8 hours the prior week.

  • Versus the same week last year: better by 19.1%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 3.7%

As always, we thank you for your business and appreciate the opportunity to serve as your transportation service provider. We welcome your feedback and questions.
