WMATA news release, received at 4:31 pm:

Metro service information for Tuesday, October 30

Due to extreme weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy that are expected to impact the entire Metro service area through the overnight hours, Metro has announced the following for Tuesday, October 30:

Metrorail and Metrobus service will not resume service Tuesday morning. An announcement on when service may be restored will be made after Metro is able to assess damage and weather conditions in the morning. Metro personnel will need to perform a comprehensive damage assessment, including inspections of track, bridges, aerial structures, stations and facilities. Metrorail service restoration is also contingent on adequate commercial power to support operations and repair of any storm-related damage. For Metrobus, service restoration will vary by route and depend on road conditions.

MetroAccess service will remain suspended all day Tuesday.

Metro will restore service only when it is safe to do so.

Customers are encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts for information regarding restoration of service as it is known. To check Metro service status by phone, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.

A scheduled Public Hearing on Tuesday also has been cancelled.

News release issued at 4:23 pm, October 29, 2012.

VRE Train Talk Alert, 10/30:

Full Schedule of Train Service - Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Sandy spared the tracks, bridges, signals and stations that VRE uses from the full brunt of the storm. Therefore, we plan on operating our full normal schedule tomorrow (Wednesday, October 31, 2012) without the expectation of delays related to flash flooding or power outages on either line.

While our system fared very well through the storm, the areas surrounding our stations may not have done so well. Take extra precaution driving along dark arterial roads as you head to the VRE stations as many trees weakened by the storm may have yet to topple and traffic signal outages are common throughout the areas.

Another significant caution to be aware of is hydroplaning. Manassas Line passengers have seen what happens when leaves get between the wheels of our locomotives and the railhead, but the same can be said for the roadway. A huge amount of leaves were shed from trees, coating slick roadways. When vehicles drive over them, even at reduced speeds - the adhesion between your tires and the roadway is quickly reduced, leaving you susceptible to uncontrolled sliding.

Bottom line, please be careful. You made it through a hurricane, don't let a wet leaf get you.

Thanks for riding VRE.

MARC Service Alerts, 10/30:

Full service on all MARC lines Wednesday, delays due to flood-related problems possible

There will be full service on all three MARC Train Service lines on Wednesday, October 31. Passengers should be aware that delays are possible due to potential signal problems as well as flooding-related speed restrictions. E-mails will be sent in the morning for any problems that arise. You can also check on the status of your MARC train on the MTA website and the MARC Tracker GPS website:

http://mta.maryland....rain/advisories
http://www.marctracker.com

Emails will be sent to passengers for stations that have problems, such as no power.

Thank you for your patience as MARC, Amtrak, and CSX worked to restore MARC service.

American Legion lot at Laurel closed Wednesday morning, add time to drive to Savage or Muirkirk

The American Legion Lot will be closed tomorrow at Laurel station. This means that parking capacity will be reduced by at least 40%. The closure is necessary due to the rising water level of the Patuxent River.

There is likely to be no parking left at Laurel after the departure of Train 845 at 6:50am. Laurel passengers should allow extra time to drive to Savage or Muirkirk stations. Laurel tickets are honored at both stations at no additional charge and there is ample parking available.

Directions to both stations are listed below. Thank you for your understanding as MARC and the Laurel Police work to prevent damage to your vehicle.

Savage is located of Route 32 at Dorsey Run Road. Coming east on 32, turn right at the top of the exit ramp, go about ¼ mile, and turn left into the station.

To get to Muirkirk, drive south on Route 1, about 6 miles south of Laurel. You will pass the station on your left. Go under the overpass and turn right on Muirkirk Meadows Road. Go about ½ mile and turn right onto Muirkirk Road. Cross the bridge over Route 1 then turn left into the station.

No power at some MARC stations, exercise caution

As of now, the following stations do not have power, and thus may not have lighting or a ticket machine (where present) Wednesday morning:

Brunswick Line: Frederick, Point of Rocks, Washington Grove

Penn Line: Perryville, Halethorpe

Camden Line: None

One way and round trip tickets may be purchased on the train with cash ONLY (no credit/debit cards accepted). The $3 surcharge will be waived for these stations.
