It appears that WES has one train down right now, as 2 trips each in the morning & evening rush hours are being bustituted. So far the trips they are not covering with a train don't match the trips we intend to take next Monday, so that may be good news. They have been doing this since Tuesday 7/13, and as of Wednesday night have already announced the same for Thursday morning. I hope things work out, but just be prepared for possible disappointment.

Aloha

There will not be disappointment, as we will be friends and trains together.

Bustitutions were cancelled for today, and all trains running as normal. :)

Kevin, we look forward to your detailed and candid reaction to the railcar design and operation, from the viewpoint of noise, comfort, speed of operation, and general adaptability to the trackage (apparently a former freight line).

WES ran on schedule the day we were there, barring a slight delay of our Wilsonville departure for deer running across the tracks. The third picture below is of the units bought from Sarah Palin's home state to hopefully use as an emergency backup instead of buses.

Mr. Corbett's first photo, of Unit# 1001, is of the "back end" of an "A" unit, the first one delivered from Colorado Railcar. (There is a second and tiny motorman's station to allow for running the car when another "A" unit is not coupled to make it a pair.) The last car to be delivered, when Colorado Railcar was in financial trouble, obliged WES management to pay additional funds to meet the plant payroll. Mr. Rader apparently required WES to also pay his personal $37,000 monthly salary or he would refuse to finish the car. WES managers knuckled under. To no surprise, WES managers were embittered by the experience. Then the Hypo-und-Vereins Landesbank pulled the plug, given the $15,000,000 overdraft.

Just to elaborate a little more on WES: The 4:35 PM Beaverton to Wilsonville trip we took was one of 3 equiipment "sets" needed to cover the schedule. Ours was the only true DMU, as we had the power car "shoving" a trailer car. We rode in the latter going south, and the former going north Wilsonville to Beaverton. The power car is obviously much noisier than the trailer. The other 2 trips that we passed were operated by single cars, so they were not real DMU's; they were DSU's! :)
