New York Transit Workers Reject Contract
Pact Killed by 7 Votes; New Walkout Feared


NEW YORK, Jan. 20 -- The city's 33,000 transit workers rejected a proposed three-year contract by seven votes Friday, raising fears of another crippling strike.

The Transport Workers Union defeated the contract 11,234 to 11,227, even after its president, Roger Toussaint, urged members to ratify the agreement.

For all the complexities and nuances of the contract that the transit workers narrowly rejected yesterday - percents and raises and insurance increases and pension contributions - the mathematics of the vote seemed to boil down to one simple number: age.
