Our second big rail fest of the summer of 2006 will take place on the East Coast of the United States, as we visit two railfan-friendly cities, Baltimore and Philadelphia. This will take all or part of three days, although our first day will include only half a day of events.

The only way I am able to hold this fest is to have it on three consecutive weekdays. I realize this may be a problem for some who work solid Monday-through-Friday work weeks, but I believe we have enough interest from people who can take off from work to make this a worthwhile gathering. I also apologize for the short notice, but there continues to be plenty on my plate from other fests past and future.

Therefore, the dates of the OTOL Mid Atlantic RailFest 2006 (or MARF 2006) will be Wednesday, August 23rd through Friday, August 25th. Hopefully you can make it all or some of those days. Remember that you get credit for joining us whether you are with us from wire to wire, or just ride with the group for one train trip.

What will we be doing at MARF 2006? Basically we will spend 1-1/2 days in Baltimore, and one full day in Philadelphia.

For the Wednesday half day, which is actually the first day of the meet, we will start after lunchtime from Baltimore Penn Station, and ride MARC the rest of the day. We will first go up to Perryville, and then all the way down the Penn Line (traversed also and owned by Amtrak) to Washington, DC. From Washington we will then ride MARC's Camden Line along CSX trackage back to a different station in Baltimore, Camden Station. For anyone staying downtown (such as the Inner Harbor), this will put you closer to your hotel.

In modern days (since 2001) we have not had a meet in Baltimore. I do recall a large 24-person (including one or two babies!) gathering back in the late 1990's when we rode the whole Baltimore LRT system. Very few of the faces I can recall are still active with OTOL, fests or otherwise. This would therefore be a new experience for some. Now factor in the recent double tracking project which increased the capacity of the LRT system, thereby decreasing running times, and we have something brand new to look forward to even if you've ridden this before. We will also ride the entire Baltimore Metro line. At any rate, the Metro and LRT should fill up our Thursday nicely.

Together we will then ride an Amtrak Regional train from Baltimore to Philadelphia. The next day (Friday) in Philadelphia, we will ride the restored #15 Girard Avenue streetcar. We also will ride three Regional Rail lines to the their most extreme endpoints. Although we have ridden parts of all of these lines before, we never made it to the last stop. We will therefore get to see Elm Street in Norristown, Cynwyd, and Newark, Delaware. The latter, of course, is along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor but many of you have never ridden this segment aboard a commuter train.

Hopefully you will be able to join us as we explore the rails in both cities!

Please start to e-mail me with your intentions. Let me know if you will be joining us on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, any combination therein, or not at all.
