MBTA awards contract for Beverly-Salem bridge repairsRiders to be shuttled on buses during closures
BEVERLY — Long-delayed repairs on the MBTA railroad bridge between Beverly and Salem should be complete by late next year.
The MBTA's Fiscal Management Control Board on Wednesday unanimously approved awarding J.F. White Contracting Company a contract for nearly $16.2 million to complete work on the bridge.
J.F. White will replace the bridge's swing span, the portion of the bridge that opens to allow ships through. The bridge's swing span is more than a century old, built in 1885, according to Joe Pesaturo, MBTA spokesman. It has broken down repeatedly over the years.
