CBC, 2/10/16:

Link Montreal to Chicago with Ontario's high speed rail, chamber president says

The provincial government should consider linking any potential high-speed rail in Ontario to cities in the midwest United States, according to president and CEO of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce.

This story is here.

But Marchand's vision is to one day link high-speed rail all the way to the Windy City by partnering with rail companies in the United States as well as Via Rail in Quebec and Ontario.

What rail company in the United States? Amtrak? I meet with some doubt here as we can't keep a viable network of trains running in our own country so why would Amtrak go international? I know there was a train once in the Chicago-Toronto corridor known as the International, whose route has survived as the Blue Water and some corridor service run by VIA Rail on the Canadian side. The fact that the former through train couldn't and didn't survive does not bode well for what this article refers to as high speed rail. I always say walk before you can run, and this is no different. Restore a Chicago-Toronto conventional train and then talk about improvements for high speed rail. An issue too will be border crossing, which for trains that have to make multiple stops means yet another stop at or near the border for customs clearance work to be done.
