Hilary disrupts Union Pacific’s Southern California network

UP will position crews and resources to help network recover

Heavy rains and flooding from Tropical Storm Hilary are disrupting Union Pacific’s network in Southern California, forcing the railway to put parts of its network out of service, according to a Monday customer update.

Areas within UP’s Mojave and Yuma subdivisions are out of service due to water and mud over the tracks, UP (NYSE: UNP) said.

“Widespread road and interstate closures are impacting our ability to transport crews to operate trains, and public electrical outages are impacting operations in some terminals,” UP said. “Once the storm passes and we are able to assess the status of our network in this area we will provide an update on estimated shipment delays.”

Union Pacific Railroad crews are making progress in the Class I's recovery from Tropical Storm Hilary’s impact on rail operations in Southern California.

Between Banning and Indio (in the Yuma subdivision), mud continues to flow back onto tracks, while operating and engineering teams are evaluating bridge work that will be required. Service has been restored near Mojave and north of Fontana, UP officials said in customer advisory notices.

UPRR Customer Advisory

Rail Operations Update

 August 23, 2023

To Our Customers,

Following is an update to our network from the recent weather events.

Southern California
Between Banning and Indio, California (Yuma subdivision) – Early this morning, we reopened one of the two tracks that traverses the bridge outage. At this point we are estimating that the bridge and corresponding track work will take approximately two weeks to repair.

Although we have returned one track to service to this impacted area, it will take multiple days to work through the backlog of trains. We will also need to re-balance locomotive power and crews to the region and customers should expect extended delays during this recovery effort.

Texas Gulf Coast
The five-mile stretch of track that was underwater near Corpus Christi, Texas has been cleared and operations have resumed.

Please continue to reference our Hurricane Planning and Recovery page, which outlines best practices to follow during the hurricane season.

If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care & Support or your Union Pacific representative.

Team UP's Recovery Efforts Continue after Tropical Storms Hilary, Harold

Team UP worked diligently to restore damaged rail lines near Palm Springs and Mojave, California, after Tropical Storm Hilary hit the region.

Union Pacific crews are working around-the-clock to address the impacts of powerful Tropical Storm Hilary, a rare West Coast storm whose heavy rains flooded tracks and suspended service in Southern California.

As record-breaking amounts of rain hit the coast, Union Pacific’s Engineering and Operating teams safely took proactive measures, staging rail ballast and panels, electric generators and personnel in the impacted areas. Team members quickly repaired damaged track and bridges, and service was restored along the Yuma and Mojave subdivisions Aug. 23. Track work continues on the Lone Pine Subdivision as of Aug. 24. All three Union Pacific routes into the Los Angeles Basin are now open.

High winds and rainfall also reached the Gulf Coast Aug. 22 when Tropical Storm Harold made landfall in South Texas. Union Pacific continues to address a submerged five-mile stretch of track near Corpus Christi, Texas.
