Service Update for Friday, October 2, 2015

The operation experienced solid performance gains with the best weekly levels of 2015 recorded in several categories. Velocity for cars and trains both increased to reach new highs for the year to date and are each running more than 10 percent above the averages from September 2013. The average of total trains held dropped by more than 20 percent to its lowest level this year with good fluidity maintained throughout the network. Total volume moved by the railroad remains strong as we exceeded the 200,000 level for the 18th week this year.

As we have reported, our engineering teams are making great progress in completing this year's capital expansion projects. More than 100 miles of new double-track and more than 870 miles of Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), a signaling system where a central dispatcher can control railroad switches, will be added on the network. The final signal cutover of CTC on our St. Croix Subdivision, which runs between St. Croix, Minnesota and La Crosse, Wisconsin, is scheduled to be completed tomorrow. In addition, we will place into service an additional five miles of double-track through La Crosse on our Aurora Subdivision this weekend. Both projects will support improved traffic flow and additional capacity along the busy Twin Cities to Chicago corridor.

We also continue with our installation and reliability testing of Positive Train Control (PTC) across the network. This week, a bipartisan bill was introduced in the House of Representatives that would extend the current December 31, 2015 deadline for implementation by three years. BNSF and all other Class I railroads have previously advised Congressional leadership and the U.S. Department of Transportation that the PTC deadline would not be met and that an extension is necessary. We are working closely with members in both houses of Congress to expedite legislative action to prevent any adverse impacts to our customers. We will continue to provide updates on these developments as the PTC deadline approaches.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending September 29:

Total trains held for the week decreased by more than 23 percent to an average of 43.0 versus 56.0 recorded the prior week.

  • Versus the same week last year: down by 82.1%
Versus the same week in 2013: down by 61.1%

Total trains on the system was down by nearly one percent from the prior week with an average of 1,546 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 291.6, which is up by more than two percent from the prior week's 285.3 MPD.

Locomotive dwell decreased by more than three percent from the prior week at 17.8 hours.

Car velocity was up by more than four percent at 231.9 MPD versus 222.9 MPD recorded the prior week.
  • Versus the same week last year: up by 24.3%
Versus the same week in 2013: up by 12.2%

Train velocity was up by nearly four percent from the prior week at 19.6 miles per hour.
  • Versus the same week last year: up by 34.2%
Versus the same week in 2013: up by 14.0%

Total volume increased slightly from the previous week with a robust 210,745 units moved in Week 38 (ending September 26).

Terminal dwell was down by 2.5 percent from the prior week at 23.7 hours.
  • Versus the same week last year: down by 14.1%
Versus the same week in 2013: down by 3.7%
