Freighthouse Square (AKA Tacoma Dome) would obviously be the best choice given the intermodal possibilities, the topography, platform, and traffic blocking issues notwithstanding.

Obviously Freighthouse Square would make the best station site for Amtrak, as it would then have easy connections with Sounder and Tacoma LINK light rail. Now if it ends up that Sounder is on the west end and Amtrak is on the east end, at least they are still at the same facility. And the trains will probably stop at the same location anyhow; only the ticketing and waiting rooms would be in different locations. But, as they say, using the east end of the existing Freighthouse Square site may be technically unfeasible. What's certain is that the current Tacoma Am-Shack becomes functionally obsolete once Amtrak is rerouted via the Point Defiance bypass route.

If the east end does turn out to be a feasible site location, I do agree it would be the best solution. A new addition would in all likelihood be needed because the current structure is not really optimal for an Amtrak waiting room and ticket office. As at KSS, the two rail systems' waiting areas, etc. would be separated out.

Tacoma Amtrak Citizens Advisory Committee to review preliminary new Amtrak station plans

The Washington State Department of Transportation will roll out its preliminary plans for a new Tacoma Amtrak station at a meeting scheduled Tuesday at the University of Washington Tacoma.

The 4:30 p.m. meeting in the UWT’s Garretson, Woodruff and Pratt Building at 1754 Pacific Ave. will be followed by a second meeting on Sept. 16 at the same location and time to show progress on the designs. Both meetings will be in the Dawn Lucien Boardroom on the building’s third floor.

While the meetings are being called by the Tacoma Amtrak Citizens Advisory Committee, the public is welcome to attend.

Nearly two years after state officials unveiled a preliminary design for Tacoma’s new Amtrak station to critical comments from Tacoma citizens and the architectural community, a final rendering is being rolled out this week by the Washington Department of Transportation.
