Train derailment, fire, evacuation in East Palestine

Officials in Columbiana County are responding to East Palestine following a train derailment and major fire that lit up the night sky for miles Friday night.

Full story

East Palestine is very close to the Ohio/Pennsylvania border, and it's on the line followed by Amtrak's Capitol Limited.   That train was annulled westbound at Pittsburgh, and eastbound at Toledo, with the equipment returning to starting points in discharge-only mode.

50-car train derailment causes big fire, evacuations in Ohio

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (AP) — A train derailment and resulting large fire prompted an evacuation order and a declaration of a state of emergency in an Ohio village near the Pennsylvania state line, covering the area in billows of smoke lit orange by the flames below.

SNIP

Mayor Trent Conaway of the village of East Palestine declared a state of emergency, citing a “train derailment with hazardous materials.” Air quality was being monitored throughout a one-mile zone ordered evacuated and there had been no dangerous readings to report, he said.

Norfolk Southern said the train was carrying more than 100 cars, 20 of which were classified as carrying hazardous materials, defined as cargo that could pose any kind of danger “including flammables, combustibles, or environmental risks.”

The National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday that it was “launching a go-team to investigate” the derailment, and board member Michael Graham would “serve as spokesperson on scene.”

EAST PALESTINE TRAIN DERAILMENT

Vinyl Chloride: How dangerous is it?

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) — Four of the train cars involved in the East Palestine train derailment were carrying a chemical called vinyl chloride. It is a very dangerous chemical when ingested or breathed in.

Officials tell First News the vinyl chloride is not on fire. One of the cars is slowly leaking pressure, which is what it is designed to do to prevent an explosion. But as other First News articles have detailed through previous coverage, the situation is still unstable.

CNN, 2/5/23

Ohio train continues burning days after derailment as officials say air, water quality remain safe for now

CNN — Officials continued on Sunday to monitor the environmental impact caused by a derailed train carrying hazardous materials late Friday in East Palestine, Ohio, a crash that led to a large inferno that continues to burn, evacuations, a shelter-in-place order and concerns about air quality.

Trent Conaway, the mayor of East Palestine, assured residents the air and drinking water remain safe after the Norfolk Southern train crash. He said classes at East Palestine schools would be canceled Monday, as would city meetings.

The train derailed in East Palestine, about 15 miles south of Youngstown, Friday evening, according to earlier comments by officials. Of the more than 100 cars, about 20 were carrying hazardous materials, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident.

Ten of those cars derailed, including five that were carrying vinyl chloride, the NTSB said in a statement Saturday. The agency said so far it had “not confirmed vinyl chloride has been released other than from the pressure release devices.”
