And there was yet another Metro North derailment same evening around White Plains, NY. From WABC-TV, ABC-7 in New York, NY:

Lawmaker demands answers after pair of Metro-North derailments

A local leader is demanding answers after a pair of minor Metro-North derailments caused massive headaches for commuters.

On Wednesday, the 5:19 p.m. train to Wassaic derailed as it was pulling away from Grand Central. Then, nearly six hours later, another train derailed near a White Plains rail yard.

Derailments revive safety fears on Metro North

Commuters huddle in Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday evening, after a derailment in the tunnel forces cancelation and combining of some Metro North trains on the New Haven Line.

Two Metro-North derailments Wednesday evening in New York delayed commuters once again and renewed concern over the beleaguered railroad's focus on safety.

No one was injured after trains left the tracks at Grand Central Terminal and White Plains, N.Y. Both derailments are under investigation by the Federal Railroad Administration.

"No derailment is a minor derailment," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn, who has been critical of Metro-North's safety practices.

The Journal News, White Plains, NY, 1/29:

Feds investigating Metro-North derailments

Metro-North officials on Thursday continued to investigate two separate train derailments the evening before – one in North White Plains and the other at Grand Central Terminal.

Federal rail authorities are investigating the two Metro-North derailments that occurred Wednesday in Manhattan and North White Plains.

"While both of these incidents were minor, they do raise questions about Metro-North's safety culture in light of their recent safety record," a spokesman for the Federal Railroad Administration told The Journal News in an email Thursday.

The agency said it would take "appropriate enforcement actions" after it identified the root causes of the accidents, which caused no injuries.

Even though Metro-North has devoted crews and resources to improving safety, the commuter railroad remains under intense scrutiny following a series of accidents, including the Dec. 1, 2013 derailment in Yonkers that killed four people. It's been addressing 25 recommendations laid out by the feds.
