SEPTA news release:

SEPTA's Airport Line Kicks-Off New Key Fare Option

April 03, 2017

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- SEPTA is kicking off the 2017 travel season with new ways to pay for travel on the Airport Line - just in time for the highly anticipated NFL Draft and annual Philadelphia events: Penn Relays, College Graduations, Welcome America and 4th of July Festivities.

As part of the SEPTA Key rollout, beginning April 17 customers taking the SEPTA Airport Regional Rail Line will be able to purchase "Quick Trips" at SEPTA fare kiosks located at each terminal stop, for travel between the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and anywhere on the SEPTA Rail system.

Additionally, starting today, April 3, visitors traveling from PHL will have the option to pay with a mobile ticket through a pilot partnership with Mozio, an airport ground transportation search engine with global reach. During the six-month pilot, SEPTA will test the potential of growing a new business and leisure travel market by highlighting the Airport Line as a ground transportation option when visitors to Philadelphia book their flights and hotels.

This is all about offering travelers, especially the scores of fans that are expected to travel to Philadelphia for the NFL Draft later this month, easy, convenient, and affordable fare payment choices through the "Quick Trips" and mobile app. Together, the SEPTA Key Quick Trip and Mozio's mobile ticketing platform will give PHL travelers convenient options to choose the Airport Line to connect to their final destination.

SEPTA news release:

SEPTA Key Implementation Moves Forward; Sales of Legacy Weekly/Monthly TransPasses & Convenience Passes At SEPTA Locations Ends June 1

April 26, 2017

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 26, 2017) - SEPTA is taking another major step toward full implementation of the SEPTA Key on buses, subways and trolleys. Starting June 1, the Authority will end sales of legacy magnetic-stripe Weekly/Monthly TransPasses and One Day Convenience Passes at SEPTA sales locations - bringing more customers into the future of fare payment with the SEPTA Key Card.

Instead of a legacy pass, customers will purchase passes loaded onto a SEPTA Key Card. Key Cards are currently and will continue to be available at Fare Kiosks at transit stations, major bus loops and SEPTA sales offices.

The SEPTA Key offers a number of benefits compared to legacy passes. For Weekly/Monthly TransPass customers, the move to the Key means no more waiting in line every week or month to purchase a pass. Customers have the option to reload online, over the phone or at a Fare Kiosks.

Balance protection - which is not available with the legacy magnetic-stripe passes - is also available with the SEPTA Key Card. Once you have your new card, call the Key Customer Call Center at (855) 567-3782 or go to www.septakey.org to register your account to protect against loss or theft.

SEPTA sales offices will continue sales of all other fare products after June 1, including tokens and TrailPasses. SEPTA has not yet set a date for the end of token sales. In addition, legacy Weekly/Monthly TransPasses will still be sold at outlying Regional Rail sales locations, and throughout SEPTA's external sales network.

Please visit www.septa.org/key for the full list of SEPTA sales locations that are discontinuing sales of legacy Weekly/Monthly TransPasses and One Day Convenience Passes on June 1. For more information about the SEPTA Key, including a detailed FAQ that is updated regularly with new customer inquiries, visit www.septa.org/key.

BillyPenn.com, Philadelphia, PA 6/30/17:

The SEPTA Key and what happened to Philly transit when TransPasses died

Now, let’s talk for a hot minute about that Key website.

There are officially more than 200,000 SEPTA Key cards in circulation; in the month of June alone, the transit authority tallied some 70,000 new Key card purchases.

SEPTA officials say the transition from the city’s old payment system to the new, digital method is ongoing, but the transit agency has now cleared one of the biggest hurdles: Getting city riders off the old weekly and monthly TransPass system.

Here’s how things went for the Key this month, and what’s next.

Continue here.

SEPTA Key Quick Trips
Buy & Use at ANY Transit Station On the Same Day

Starting Friday, October 6, 2017

Using a SEPTA Key Quick Trip for those occasional rides is about to get even easier because now you can purchase a Quick Trip at any Transit Station and use it at any Transit Station.

No more lines to purchase your fare when you're heading home from the game or hurrying to buy your fare before the train gets to the station. Just buy 2 Quick Trips from the Station Fare Kiosk at the start of your ride, and use the second Quick Trip for your ride home on the same day - it's that simple. The front of the Quick Trip will show the date, time, and station where it was purchased but it can be used at any Market Frankford or Broad Street Line station, as noted below.

All of the other features of the Quick Trip remain the same. Using the Quick Trip is the same as paying cash - $2.50 - but with the extra convenience of using a credit or debit card or not needing exact change to pay at the Fare Kiosk.

SEPTA news release:

SEPTA Reminds Riders of Medicare Card Phase Out Effective Jan. 16

Riders Eligible for Free & Reduced Fare Rides Are Transitioning to SEPTA Key

December 15, 2017

PHILADELPHIA (December 15, 2017) - SEPTA would like to remind riders that Medicare Cards will no longer be accepted for free-and reduced-fare rides as of Jan. 16, 2018. SEPTA had initially announced this would take effect Jan. 1, however, it has been extended two weeks to give riders additional time to prepare.

The phase-out of Medicare Cards is part of the transition to the SEPTA Key. It was part of the fare tariffs that were approved by the SEPTA Board and went into effect July 1. Many senior citizens and riders with disabilities have already transitioned to new SEPTA Key Photo ID Cards, ensuring they will continue to receive eligible free and reduced fares without interruption. SEPTA has issued 90,000 SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Cards, and nearly 15,000 SEPTA Key Reduced Fare Photo ID Cards for riders with disabilities.

Senior Citizens
With a valid ID, senior citizens age 65 and older ride free at all times on all SEPTA Transit Routes (Bus, Trolley, Trackless Trolley, Broad Street/Broad Ridge Spur Line, Market Frankford Line/Norristown High Speed Line). In addition, seniors pay just a $1 fare on Regional Rail for travel within Pennsylvania, and receive 50 percent off the weekday fare for travel to/from New Jersey and Delaware.

As of Jan. 16, 2018:

  • Medicare Cards and Railroad Retirement Cards will no longer be accepted for senior rides.
  • SEPTA will continue to accept Pennsylvania Driver/Non-Driver Licenses with magnetic stripes.
  • Paper Senior Citizen Transit ID Cards will also continue to be accepted for senior rides until further notice.

Seniors who have not yet signed up to get their new SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card can do so at the local offices of their state senators and representatives, or at SEPTA Headquarters, 1234 Market Street, Philadelphia. Same-day cards can also be issued at SEPTA Headquarters and at Suburban Station's Accessible Travel Center weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To receive a SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID Card, applicants must fill out an application and show one of the following forms of identification: Pennsylvania Driver/Non-Driver License; Birth Certificate; Baptismal Certificate; Yellow PACE Card (Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly); Statement of Age Verification from the U.S. Social Security Administration; Armed Forces Discharge/Separation Papers; Resident Alien Card; Passport/Naturalization Papers. For more information or questions about the SEPTA Key Senior Photo ID, visit http://www.septa.org...-free-info.html, or call SEPTA Customer Service at (215) 580-7800.

Riders With Disabilities
Disabled riders will continue to be eligible to receive half off fares with valid ID. The new SEPTA Key Reduced Fare Card allows riders to load funds to the card's Travel Wallet for tap-and-go payment on all SEPTA Transit Routes (Bus, Trolley, Trackless Trolley, Broad Street/Broad Ridge Spur Line, Market Frankford Line/Norristown High Speed Line). On Regional Rail, riders show the SEPTA Key Reduced Fare Card and pay half-fare, as they have with Medicare Cards and paper Pennsylvania Reduced Transit Fare ID Cards.

As of Jan. 16, 2018:

  • Riders will not be able to use Medicare Cards to receive half-fare.
  • Paper Pennsylvania Reduced Transit Fare ID Cards will continue to be accepted for half-fare until further notice.

SEPTA urges eligible riders who have not registered for a SEPTA Key Reduced Fare Card to do so as soon as possible. Applications can be downloaded and printed from SEPTA's website at http://www.septa.org...isabled-id.html. Bring the completed application, Medicare Card (if applicable) and a valid, state-issued ID to SEPTA Headquarters or the Accessible Travel Center at Suburban Station to receive a new SEPTA Key Reduced Fare Card. Those with questions about the SEPTA Reduced Fare program should call SEPTA CCT Customer Service at (215) 580-7145.

SEPTA news release :

SEPTA To Begin Phase Out of Token Sales in Early 2018

Riders Encouraged to Make Switch to SEPTA Key

PHILADELPHIA (December 20, 2017) - With more riders making the transition to the SEPTA Key, token sales will be phased out at cashiers' booths and vending machines at Market-Frankford and Broad Street Line stations starting in mid-January 2018. Tokens will continue to be sold at major SEPTA sales offices, Regional Rail stations, and at over 200 third-party retailers until further notice.

The phase-out of token sales represents the next major step forward for the SEPTA Key fare modernization project. Earlier this year, SEPTA ended sales of "legacy" magnetic strip TransPasses at its sales offices, which has resulted in most weekly and monthly TransPass customers moving to reloadable SEPTA Key Cards. In addition, the Travel Wallet - the pay-as-you-go option that provides the same discounted fare as a token - has enticed customers to move to the SEPTA Key. Key Cards are currently free with a $10 minimum load.

The Travel Wallet feature allows customers to add value to a SEPTA Key Card for tap-and-go travel on all Transit modes, including buses, city and suburban trolleys, trackless trolleys, the Market-Frankford Line, the Broad Street-Line/Broad-Ridge Spur and the Norristown High Speed Line. Customers who currently use tokens, paper transfers or pay with cash can transition to the Key - and leave behind the days of worrying about having exact change or pre-purchasing tokens. The Travel Wallet will automatically deduct single-rides at the discounted token rate, and process transfers.

Here is how customers can move from tokens and paper transfers to the SEPTA Key Card:

  • Visit a fare kiosk on the Broad Street Line, Market-Frankford Line or major bus loop. Follow the directions on the touch screen menu and select Travel Wallet;
  • Load funds (between $10-$250) using cash, debit or credit card. In addition, customers who have tokens can load them onto their Travel Wallet at fare kiosks;
  • Once you have a Key Card, you are ready to tap-and-go to pay fares on all Transit modes;
  • Reload funds at kiosks, sales offices, online at the Key ecommerce website, www.septakey.org, or by calling the Key Customer Service Center at (855) 567-3782;
  • Customers are also urged to visit www.septakey.org or call (855) 567-3782 as soon as they get their Key Card to register it and protect from loss or theft.

With token sales declining due to riders moving to the SEPTA Key, approximately half of the station vending machines on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines have already been removed. Beginning in mid-January, cashier sales will end and the 40 remaining token machines will be removed over a six-week period - with token sales at all these locations ending on or about March 1, 2018. The full phase-out schedule will be posted on SEPTA's website, www.septa.org, in early January.

For more information about the SEPTA Key, including a detailed FAQ that is continually updated with new questions from customers, visit www.septa.org/key.
