Overcrowding is something that happens on bright sunny days with no recent storm having hit. But ceasing service isn't the solution. Just keep running the trains until the backlog is cleared up. Technically there is only ONE station unique to the North Jersey Coast Line, Woodbridge, that was supposed to have service, since Avenel is much smaller, only served by a handful of trains normally, and if I recall correctly was not going to have service initially under this emergency situation. So unless there were such mobs of people that they were standing on the train tracks because they could not fit on the platform, I can't see why service had to be cancelled. Perhaps people were driving to Woodbridge, and there was noplace left to park? Just a thought.

One report that I just found suggests that the very first train to leave Woodbridge was a 12 car train carrying 1,200 passengers or about 100 pax per car. Of course the unknown factor in this is whether or not it was a single level or multi-level train.

On the other hand, the NYC subways pack many more people into a car than 100.

From San Francisco, CA Chronicle, 11/6/12:

New Jersey Transit’s Damaged Rail Cars Won’t Be Easy to Replace

On top of having to fix damaged tracks and an operations center ruined by floodwaters, New Jersey Transit’s biggest obstacle to restoring full service for 276,000 daily rail commuters may be finding cars and engines.

Earlier this week I did observe while driving on the Driscoll Bridge (Garden State Parkway) over on the drawbridge used by the North Jersey Coast Line between Perth and South Amboys, there were at least 3 high rail vehicles on the bridge, presumably making inspections or repairs.
