Momentum Builds as Brightline Readies for Introductory Service This Summer

Brightline, the only privately-funded express passenger rail system in the country, is within months of its much anticipated service launch, marking the first time a new private infrastructure passenger rail project will initiate operations in the US in more than 100 years.

The Orlando station should be ready by late 2018, but service to it won't start until very late 2019 at the earliest and perhaps even as late as early 2020, as it looks now.

In just a few short weeks, we will welcome two more trainsets to Florida: BrightGreen and BrightOrange. They will soon depart California en route to Workshop b in West Palm Beach, marking the first time two trainsets will be delivered at once.

Brightline rail will start with deeply discounted fares

The new Brightline rail service linking Miami to West Palm Beach with a stop in Fort Lauderdale will start with deeply discounted fares when it takes its first runs in late summer and offers full service in the early fall, CEO Dave Howard says.
While he wouldn’t reveal the fare structure, Mr. Howard told a Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce transportation meeting last week that the discounted cost is “going to be less than the cost of driving your car.”

The massive station is rising. But the train service is not quite ready to roll

The much-anticipated Brightline trains will be rolling into stations a little later than expected.

Florida East Coast Industries’ $3 billion high-speed rail service connecting West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami is now scheduled to begin by the end of 2017.

From RPA 12-1-2017

Though All Aboard Florida has not announced a start date for Brightline, Fitch Ratings agency, reported that service between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach will begin in December, and service to Miami will start in early 2018. Brightline officials declined to comment on the report, which Fitch made as part of its analysis of a $600-million bond issue being set up to pay for the higher-speed passenger service. The report also said that Brightline’s potential is good, based on strong revenue generated by other passenger rail service elsewhere in the U.S. According to the report, Fitch said that Brightline can expect $147.6 million in revenue in 2021. The report predicted the service can break even with revenue of $90.6 million, ridership of 1.6 million, and average fares substantially lower than those offered on Amtrak’s Acela service from Washington, D.C. to Boston.

If Brightline begins service in December, it will be five months after the original proposed launch date. A series of issues delayed the launch, including ongoing signal work at rail crossings across Palm Beach County. Brightline will be the first passenger trains to run on the Florida East Coast Railway tracks since 1968, when passenger service was discontinued following a protracted union strike.

Palm Beach (FL) Post, 12/9/17:

Brightline stimulating South Florida with simulated train service

I’ve got to hand it to the people at Brightline.

They’ve come up with a brilliant move: Simulated train service.

I can’t wait to be sitting at a Florida East Coast Railway train crossing in my car waiting for the big moment.

Will it be one of those soul-crushing, three-engine freight trains that go on for miles and sometimes slow to a crawl? Or will it be one of Brightline’s new, brightly colored commuter trains zooming by at 79 miles an hour?

It’s a great way to get the public to appreciate Brightline.

“Brightline: At least it’s not a freight train.”

It’s a motto that might work.
